Hello all, I'm new to the forum and I'm about to become an SLK55 AMG owner!
Current car is a Golf R32, so I'm really looking forward to driving the AMG (except when it snows!)... due to collect it on Wednesday :)

SmartTop has arrived! :tu:

The extended warranty company are doing an inspection of the car tomorrow (check everything works before taking the car onto warranty), so I'm going to wait until after that before I install the SmartTop... last thing I want to do is to risk introducing issues with the car the day before they inspect it! ;)

I've read through the various SmartTop installations threads, and I think I'm going to try installing it myself... wish me luck! :)

Good luck! read read read and print it out. if you use a tablet, you might flip through an important part, so I always suggest a hard copy.

and protect your forearms!!!

SmartTop is now installed and working! :)

I read the threads here (particularly this one: SmartTop Roof module Install for the R171), and also printed the DIY_SmartTop PDF in that thread too... all very useful, and a big thank you to @etyu for creating it (and anyone else that contributed to it too).

Thanks Jeff, the recommendation to use hardcopy was a good call too :tu: ... and now I know what you mean by 'protect your forearms'! ;)

Start to finish took me about 90 minutes. Most of the 'lost time' was in trying to remove the main canbus cover (there must be a 'knack' to getting that off and I didn't find it), a little while trying to remove the small can bus plug cover (I wanted to be careful), and a couple of brief refreshment breaks (it's warm here today).

I definitely recommend reading through the mods4cars install manual, as well as the above DIY install guide too before starting the install.

Finally, it's a real PITA having a RHD car with the accelerator on the far right hand side of the car (too near to the right hand side bulkhead)... this makes it very tight trying to lift the carpet enough to get the main can bus cover off!

All-in-all, I'm very pleased with my lunchtime task!

Great n congrats! Don't forget to set your max speed

At the moment, I've set it to 60kph / 38mph - but wasn't sure whether this was too high. My plan was only to use it whilst moving if absolutely necessary (e.g. it starts raining while I'm stuck in slow-moving traffic) and I can limit myself to lower speeds by not driving that quickly when using it. Is there some other advice/recommendation to set it somewhere lower?

That is good but half the fun is putting it up or down approaching lights or when people behind you are snapping pics! No other convertible that doesn't have the Smarttop can do that. Smooth roads of course. Also from inside shops etc where you can see the car to wow em. I know you read the how far is the range thread

I bought it from an MB Independent Specialist in Nottingham (it was owned by one of their customers). There are pictures of it earlier in this thread, and I've also entered it in this month's ROTM too, so there are 3 pics of it in that thread too. :)

Oh, I thought you meant us mods are going to slow down.

Jeff, I never thought for a second that you (or any of the other moderators) would be slowing down one bit! :)

Good day all!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I didn't want to get in trouble ;) by posting a second new member thread, even though it feels a little like I'm a new member all over again!

I'm sure there are many here that have no idea who I am, but I used to be quite active on the forum until around 11 months ago (I didn't realise it was that long ago until I checked when my last post was)! I was a moderator on the 'old' forum, and some job changes meant I got very busy, spending way too much time out on the road - so much so that I never really felt much like driving the SLK, even at weekends. Checking on the insurance (that I renewed last month), I found I'd only done around 400 miles in the SLK in the past year!

Now, that's going to change!... I've reduced my hours (and the amount of driving) significantly. I will still be spending a couple of days a week out on the road, but that's less than it has been for some time now, so I'm hoping/expecting to be around more often now... just once I've got used to the new format and learned where everything is!

PS. I know my signature file needs updating ... I'll do that as soon as I've figured where to put some of the info in it so that I don't lose it (without contravening the new forum signature rules).

PPS. and a huge welcome to all those new members that have joined in the last 11 months since I was last here! (y)
