Smile Hi from the Netherlands

I just got my very first Mercedes, a 2001 R170 32 AMG with 160k kilometers on it. It's in fairly good condition, but does have some specks on the hood from impacts with small objects (we call it steenslag, I'll start looking for an English word for it). They're are about 3 very small spots with starting rust, which will have to be addressed soon, it needs new tires and a new windscreen and radio (original Mercedes Audio 30 APS with navigation installed, but even though all the original documentation is included, the one thing missing is the key for the radio), but other than that is pretty much okay and needs only minor work.

The water duct with the little roster is blocked on the right side and I've been trying to clear it, without a lot of success so far, but I'll hopefully find a way of doing that on this forum.

So far, driving it has been an amazing experience. The way it handles and accelerates, while still presenting a comfortable ride is, after having had a Subaru Impreza turbo, great. It allows for a very relaxed ride, but will try to spear the horizon on its nose once called for. I still get 10 kilometers to a liter petrol, which is nothing short of fantastic at 354 horses. Both my Subaru and VW T3 never got that, not even mentioning my father's '84 500 SEC .

Any owners in the Rotterdam area?

Melvin

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from NE England!

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:

If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.

In addition, if you haven’t, please post your question in the appropriate discussion forum for a quicker response and only once. Be patient and a knowledgeable member will address your question.

If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.

Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.

Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.

New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.

Post your vin in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a datacard (options on your car) free.

Welcome!! Based on my German, by steenslag (steinschlag) I would think you mean "stone chips" caused by small stones being thrown up by cars ahead of you (that shouldn't be many in a 32AMG!).

The blocked drain/screen is a common problem for cars parked out of doors near trees etc. I suggest a small diameter plastic tube (over here, such tubing is used as a drain pipe for air conditioning for example) - it can push the blockage (usually leaves/debris) through, and if you're clever attach it to your water supply (wasserhahne) and blow it out.. DO NOT use drain cleaner/acids etc...

Thank you, Flieger. I tried removing the blockade by pushing an electrician's tool for adding electrical wiring through pvc tubes through it, but the dirt wouldn't budge and the duct is still blocked. I tried getting it clear from the downside up, but couldn't locate the opening.

I've looked into the SLK Club and will join them next month. I'll also be getting the SmartTop sometime soon, which is a no-brainer if I'm to believe you guys (which I do).

Today I'm having my windshield replaced, as it's cracked and I've ordered new tyres. Next on the list is stone chips on the bonnet and the boot cover, which has a starting rust spot, so I'll have to look into a good spray painter in my area.

I'll schedule a maintenance session to get new spark plugs, filters and fluids, as I have no idea of when the car had its last 'overhaul', too. It does have new brake discs, so it did get some maintenance before sitting at a dealership for god knows how long, but who's to tell when this happened? There's no mention of it in the service log.

I thought about exchanging my original Mercedes stereo, but I kinda like the idea of keeping it 'original'. In light of this, I'm not planning on having performance mods done.

..re blockage... I wonder if a little warm water...down the drain pipe.. let it sit for a bit.. maybe the blockage needs to be softened (you know how clay etc can harden when it's dry). vorschlag

Flieger, with the summer we're having right now, it should (understatement of the year) be soaked through and through. It's been raining for weeks (on and off, but very little sunshine for the past few weeks).

another thread has suggested compressed air.. from below...

I liked your idea of the "fishing tape" - did you get anything on the end of it?? I'm wondering if you rotate it, once it's as far in as it will go, whether it would start to "drill" (boren) into the blockage.

Unfortunately, it doesn't turn as it's 20 meters long and just impossible to handle with precision. I've got an iron springlike thing that's designed to clear plumbing, but it has a pointy tip and could puncture the rubber duct, so I'd rather not use it.
