Angry Older SLK, New Member

Hello to all:
I am the original owner of a 1999 Bahama Blue SLK with automatic transmission. In the 15 years I've owned the car, I have only put 66,700 miles on it. I find that now that I'm getting older (I'm 66) I am driving it less and less, opting for my more comfortable Infiniti M.

Insurance and general upkeep for a car I am now driving only about 2000 miles per year are onerous. Everyone in my family (even my Mercedes "advisor" at the dealership) tells me that it might me time to part with what is now an expensive "toy," as they call it.

But every time I take a look at the SLK, the sheer beauty of it weighs hard against the financial truths, and I just can't bring myself to put it up for sale.

I know there comes a time to part with just about everything, and, even though I've sold or traded in a dozen or more cars in my life, I've never had anything close to the emotional attachment I have to this vehicle. I have the feeling that I'm not alone in that sentiment.

Anyone out there who can help talk me into keeping or selling the car, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Welcome to the elite SLKWorld forum!

Just a few suggestions to make your time here a fun and informative experience...

The "Search" feature at the top right of the page is for searching the forum. Many questions have already been asked and answered by our knowledgeable members.

If you are having difficulty finding a solution, you can post your question in the appropriate discussion forum. By doing this, you should receive a quicker response, but please be patient as the forum is worldwide and members live in different time zones.

Private Message (pm) is a tool to communicate with other members privately for instructions or just chatting. In order to do this you must have at least 15 posts. It's easy to obtain the posts by clicking on the New Members Introduce Yourself Here section and just welcome the new members (like we welcomed you).

To post a picture, either start a new thread or reply to one, type what you want to say and click on the 'paper clip' just above, this will open a window to your left, click on 'browse', go to your pictures, and double click on the one you want to post, click on 'upload' and then 'submit' your post.

If you like a comment or want to thank another member for their post, there's a 'like' button to the right and just below is the 'thanks' button.

As a new member you can use the New Posts link at the top of the info bar. It's a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last.

When you are ready to leave the forum just click on "Quick Links" and click 'mark forums read', this will clear your screen for when you log on again.

Post your vin in the Vehicle Data Card Request section to get a data card (options on your car) free.

As a member you have the privilege to vote and/or enter our Ride of the Month competition, we welcome new SLKs to compete and new members to vote.

If you have any questions/comments please let us know and we will be happy to help you.

Thanks for joining our SLK family!

Welcome from NE England. Congratulations on your SLK.

2000 miles a year - that's a lot. I picked mine up from the factory in Bremen, Germany in November 2004. It's now got 14042 miles on it, and no way would I consider selling it.

Welcome from NC! That's a beauty. Nothing wrong with an emotional attachment to a car. I travel most weeks for work and every time I get home from the airport I kiss the wife and kids then hop in my SLK for a spin. Driving rental cars all week, I can't wait to get back and hear that roar of an AMG engine. Keep your SLK for those perfect top down days and when you want to feel your pulse pound while driving!

A warm welcome from Southern Arizona. Good to have you on board. My two cents would be to keep it as long as it is not a financial burden. Those 2,000 miles a year are priceless. Enjoy the people, the forum, and top down cruisin'.

Who said? "The greater the mind, the more need for play." It doesn't matter whether you drive it 1 mile or 10,000 - there's nothing like that SLK top down feeling. I'll be 64 myself soon and there's no way, I'd sell my SLK - I still manage to fly around on my Yamaha XJ6 Streetfighter too...(Even though it kills me getting on it with my Arthritis, ) "Keep the car"

Definitely keep it! As others have said, take it out only when conditions are perfect for top-down driving and savor the experience. Consider talking to your insurance agent about a low-annual-mileage collectible insurance policy if cost is really a factor; for most insurers anything under 7500 miles annually is considered low. Not sure what rates are in Jersey, but in Oregon these cars are ridiculously affordable. My '06 SLK280 is the cheapest of the three vehicles I insure at a little more than $46/month for full coverage.

I am in the same boat but love the looks and drive of our 99 SLK and cannot part with it. I have arthritis and have problems getting in and out of the car. Keep it if you love it as I do mine. We use our SLK ONLY for weekend road trips to the mountains or near by Joshua Tree NP. We have another 'more comfortable' car for longer trips. Our SLK (77k) is not a daily driver. It's a fun beautiful toy.

As our cars get older there are fewer of them on the road. Because there are so few of them, people often think our SLK is a newer car. I tell people it is a 99 and they cannot believe it. Honestly where I live there are so many Infiniti M's on the road. There is nothing special about them. If I ever wanted to replace my current 99 SLK I would consider getting a Jaguar F-Type or Aston Martin Vantage roadster.

If your car is a 'daily driver' then I would consider getting another car if comfort is important to you.

Good Luck --- Beautiful car by the way!

P.S. I sold my first 99 SLK and regretted it. Hence my current 99 SLK

Keep the SLK it will only go up in value and will keep you young in the meanwhile. If money is a problem then get rid of the Infinity and buy a Honda Jazz. It will do everything the SLK can't do and is cheaper to run than the Infinity
