Exclamation New Member - Question about Installing

Hi folks,

I'm a new SLK-350 owner, Manual transmission, Designo ...

Anyway - I want to install some electronics in behind the stereo ... to be honest it's a 3-part radar detector - the main body is about 4"x2"x2" and needs to pass a wire through the firewall past the engine and through to the cavity behind the number-plate ...

HOW DO I OPEN IT UP UNDER THERE (behind airco/gps/etc) WITHOUT CAUSING ANY DAMAGE ???

Thanks to anyone in advance !!

Cheers
Nigel

First off, welcome from London via Louisiana. Second, search for my thread on the "Escort 9500ci" install - it will give you some ideas about how I did it.

https://www.slkworld.com/diy-section/...i-install.html

There's also a thread on a COMAND NTG2.5 install (Adam's) that has some good details about pulling the radio and associated bits out. I decided not to put anything behind the head, and to use the passenger footwell electronics bay instead.

UKc200,

2 questions:

1/ can you get access to the "cigarette lighter" power from behind the Airco? (for hotwiring off)
2/ you wouldn't know the tool-types (dimensions ie: 1/4" hex) for both the passenger foot-plate nuts; and and also for the screws (star-hex?) of the center console?

PS: I'm going to put the switches and LED display on the Change-tray (ashtray) at the bottom ... less movement of the wires and a bit more hidden ... (Beltronics STi-

you can get access to the cigarette lighter from behind the cigarette lighter, and there's loads of space back there.

You need a #20 torx driver to get that out and the airscarf/heatedsetas/ parktronic/traction control switch unit. The climate control module just pulls out as it is attached to the other two.

You need a #25 torx to remove the stereo. It all comes out very easily in a few seconds and there is LOADS of room behind there. It's an electronics installer's dream to work on. (Trust me, I dream about it!).

You need to pull the gearstick surround up first to take the cigarette lighter out.

You do that by reaching around the lip at the bottom of the gaiter (best place to get a grip) and just yanking it upwards. It will come out easily.

Once up, twist it through 90 degrees to get it out of the way of the ash tray. There is no need to remove it.

Thanks Adamantium !

Adamant

Thanks man - that confirms it, I really only need put everything in behind the console, I'l going to put the STIr display on the front of the Ashtray, nicely recessed ... the only problem is finding a grommet...

I still reckon the one behind the passenger floor is the best - and there's a nifty "tube/collar" running out under there also ... beautifully convenient !

Thanks for that - I'll start a new thread soon and keepya posted!

Nigel

PS: the Designo's the leather and wood combo - the roll-bars are covered designo same also, makes the draught-stop a bit tight but it works(!) ... I'm going to repaint the SLK also same periclGreen but Satin rather than gloss finish ... very stealthy look!

Still don't have enough credits on this site yet to upload pictures

Cool, looks like you will have some fun!! I think the STI uses the same RJ22 stype connectors as the 9500ci, so do yourself a favor and get a good crimper to sort out the tons of extra wires you'll have.

Does your STI support "Radio mute" on alarm? If so, *strongly* suggest you hook it up, really gets your attention when you are jammin to some cool tunes and it goes off... :P

Adam covered most of your questions, the passenger footwell nuts are either 9mm or 10mm, can't remember off the top of my head.

STIr connectors etal

UK-C200

yes the STi is incredibly similar to the 9500ci - I'm putting another one in the ML, but starting on the SLK first.

No Radio-mute option though ... I've got volume control for the Xternal speaker - which will be just bolted in behind the Command system ... but I know what you mean, I've been caught before not looking at it, drowned out with noise !

I'll cut and crimp as I go ... should be done this weekend I'm hoping ... the only really fiddly bit will be carving the displays into the ashtray ...
