Sophia Floresch Macau GP crash

One of the most frightening that I have seen outside F1.

She is due an op tomorrow, but has said that she is ok.
5 others were hurt.

She is only 17 yrs old.
Had a spinal injury, which op has fixed.

Not hearing much about the other 5 though.
Disappointing.

Yes, sport is dangerous, but it doesn't happen safely without marshals, medics etc.

Lucky, very lucky

A horrible crash, and obviously the main concern is the wellbeing of everyone injured, hope that Sophia and all the marshalls & photographers make a full recovery.

I am certain the FIA will take a careful look to learn any lessons for the future. But just consider these points where we were incredibly lucky. There could easily have been multiple fatalities.

There was no fire. With her injured in the car and other injured people on the scene, the marshalls understandably took a few seconds to collect their thoughts and react.

The photographers bunker was a solid construction with a roof and steelworker above the opening. We've all seen these as just a scaffold platform with a handrail at the front. Like the TV camera platform demolished by a rolling BTCC car at Snetterton a couple of years ago.

Also lucky the car flew so energy was absorbed by the fence before the impact. What would have been the result of a perpendicular guard rail impact at that speed?

Finally the car went in backwards so the driver was protected by the engine and headrest. Plus there was a much larger area hitting the fence and bunker. Imagine if it had penetrated the bunker nose first...

Excellent points.
Not all that long ago this would be likely to produce multiple fatalities and many more injuries.
Everyone bemoans the efforts of the various motorsport bodies when they suggest improvements.
But, even in club racing, we know have a much better standard to both prevent and handle these incidents.
