Pretty sad, 300TD Turbodiesel AMG

I'm a W123er, and I have to say this is probably the lowest rung of MB "posery" one could attempt.

OMFG! This car ended up down here in South Florida. I saw it the other day at a neighbor's house.

Maybe he just confused the "Amazing Mercedes Slam-Matic"* trans as being an AMG upgrade because it jerked and slammed you into the seat with every torque-full-on gear change. (*That's what I called the trans in our '83 300SD.)

hmmmm...

Why would they scar an old MB in GREAT shape with an AMG sticker??

That car looks like it's in really good shape

Who knows.... *shrugs* maybe they took that car to Germany and paid the gents at AMG to do some upgrades.

now I'm thinking.....hmmmmm..... An AMG Smartcar!!! As soon as my Smarty calves the engine I'll ship it off to Germany

You mean bloody fat Americans? Check me out man, guilty on all accounts! ;-)

Yeah I know. Let's just call it Byron'z Manual Chip on his Shoulder.

It is not a dig on people but a dig on the corporation's attitude and how much trouble they gave me for getting a manual and the various times people say "you should have gotten the AMG!" I get tired of defending my SLK350 because asses cannot comprehend that while I had enough to buy an SLK55 (actually, I had enough to buy the Carrera S I was looking at too) I bought what I wanted, and there should be no shame in that.

There should be no shame for anybody who bought the car they wanted, whether it is only what they could afford or not. There are reasons for each different one to exist, and reasons that make each different one appealing from the others. Celebrate Diversity!

I agree it is not as talented as the one came up to describe my other car, and I can say this with love as I grew up in East Detroit:

C ars
A lways
D riven
I n
L ow
L it
A fro
C ommunities

or (C)heck (T)its before (S)tarting...

Does your car turn you on, baby? Yeah, after I let it sit for 2 hours so the Windows Automotive will reboot and I can get directions on the NAV! ;-)

Did my comment upset you? I am not sure

Just thought the "Majority" of Americans ( whatever size they are) prefer an automatic!!!!!!!

No not at all. I was joking about how Clarkson refers to us.

BMW says over 46% of their US cars that are available with stick are sold with them, so it is a misnomer on some counts.

However, we invented the automatic! ;-) Also, our fuel is cheaper and many cars were available here with standard engines that were more powerful, so there was less need to pass on the automatic for a manual to make the car perform faster and get better fuel mileage.

Specifically Mercedes-Benz has always been seen as a Luxury marque here in the US, and luxury cars have automatics. Mercedes never brought their cheaper or "decontented" cars here so noone ever challenged that notion. Hell, can you ever have gotten a Benz in the US without leather seats after the 60's?

Just to jump in the "auto vs. manual" and the "US vs the ROW" topic: in the States, the car is viewed by most as our version of "mass transit". We don't have good trains and intercity busses are not up to European specs. So the average American buys their car just to get to work and back, and views it much as they view their kitchen appliances. Hence the fact that most prefer boring cars with autos. But I bet if you took a survey, the percentage of "actual car enthusiasts" here and in the UK (or elsewhere) is about the same. I use a truck for a daily driver (don't see many of those in Europe), but have the 55 just because I love cars. I spent some time going back and forth between the engine and the transmission, and for me the engine won. But I still look at those nice M series BMWs and may trade for one some day...

But no hard and fast rule exists to categorize people anywhere. Folks in the US are as diverse as folks in Europe. New Yorkers are as different from Texans as the English are from the Italians. And even not all of the New Yorkers and English are alike, eh?

However, we're all here because we like the SLK, wherever from whence we come...

The "fork thing" is only in Gainesville, and every year the mayor traditionally goes into a local restaurant, eats fried chicken with a fork, and is thrown into jail. The local populace then have a fair to raise money to bail him out, and the funds go to charity. Not much to do in Gainesville...

I never thought someone putting an AMG emblem on a 300 TD would digress so rapidly....

What were we talking about again?

Automatics?
Americans?
Giraffes?
Sheep?
Forks?
Price of Gas?
Luxury?
Personal choice of vehicles?

With this much chaos and controversy I think I'm gonna start a website called "Posers.com"

Georgia was the last state to have a Sodomy law on the books. They threw a guy in jail for it in the early 90's. So don't bring your French mistress.
