Smart=Mercedes, right?

Yeah, I know that Smart cars are built by Mercedes. Like Lexus is made by Toyota. So does that excuse this one?

No. It's like putting BMW badges on a Mini.

There is no excuse for "Smart Cars".....what an oxymoron!

Ive seen this before here in Norway!
I was parked outside my local tyre shop. And when I went back outside there was a Smart Roadster parked besides my car.
It was only untill I backed out from my parking spot that I saw the Mercedes badge on the back...

It is because smart people buy Mercedes. So they call it a Smart Car.

I'm not a fan of any re-badged cars. However, it should be pointed out that the original Smart concepts actually did have the Mercedes badge.

Smart stands for "Swatch Mercedes Art" and in the early goings of the company (before they actually produced the first car) there was a lot of 'debate' about if the car would be badged as a mercedes or a swatch (the developer of the idea of the car). So, if a Smart owner really wants to go back to it's roots, the mercedes badge, as found on the original smarts actually makes sense.

This should not be compared to Mini/BMW which was two seperate car companies that merged as the first smart was built by mercedes. When it comes to Lexus or Acura, I find it interesting that everything under the hoods of these cars are branded Toyota and Honda and it's really just the exterior that has a different badge.

The badge doesn't really matter IMO, the manufacturer/engineering is what counts. If you want to have the badge of the company that manufactured your car, I get it. But I just wouldn't do it.

Nicely modified. Look nice on the car but an A450 is a bit too much ... a 4.5L of power on this small car ... it can easily overpower a Veyron

... I opted for a Smart car as a loaner (courtesy vehicle) when my SLK was being serviced before only because I wanted to test drive one for a couple days. I had a small inkling of possibly getting one for a rain car but the following experiences behind the wheel of a Smart car changed my mind...

Point 1: transmission was not as smooth as the SLK... it felt like it had huge amounts of torque when stepping on the accelerator, as the car would buck with the clutch action but there was nothing behind the engine to give it any peppiness

Point 2: driving over 65 with a crosswind of 5+ mph is not recommended

Point 3: passing or being passed by a tractor trailer rig on the freeway... see Point 2

Point 4: following my honey's Corvette just made me feel so sad!

To be fair to the Smart car... the things I *did* like about it...

Counterpoint 1: lots of fun to park in public parking spaces (parallel or otherwise, especially those skinny parking spaces where you'd never think of parking your SLK)

Counterpoint 2: if you've never been behind the wheel of an SLK, this would definitely be a fun car to just putz around in because of the "no one else has one" factor

Counterpoint 3: it does take turns pretty well!

Counterpoint 4: it does go over 75 (but not recommended... see local traffic laws for more information)

Counterpoint 5: Brabus made a turbo-charged version!!! check it out here ===>Brabus SMART car

The Smart was/is meant to be a town runabout...not a 75mph highway car.

As for the engine, no idea, but I am surprised - Mitsubishi engine/power trains are usually very robust and was about the only good thing in 70s/80s Chryslers...(small car line).

When I was stationed in Germany in 2000 that was the factory badging for those, we had them as rentals while preparing for the Kosovo conflict.

I test drove one shortly before finding my SLK. I liked it, except for the transmission.

Now they have an electric version which doesn't have the transmission issue. I test drove one when I decided to get an electric. This was much better. But I decided on the Leaf because we would do a lot more electric miles with a car that could seat all three of us and the Leaf had a more solid feel to it. Also my wife was very opposed to having two of our cars be 2 seaters. But I did seriously consider the electric Smart. For the price point, I think the Smart ED is awesome deal after the federal and state incentives.

Not a poser.

I rode in one of those things in Milan when I hailed an 'Uber.'

It's mostly only found in Europe - the A class. It didn't feel like a Luxury automobile but over there, Merc also makes many of the public transport buses, etc.

It'd make a ready-to-use coffin in the right kind of accident. Saving some money or burial expenses might be smart?

The gas mileage isn't good enough to bribe me. If I had to park in a city, maybe. I think you'd get treated like a motorcycle - no respect. The driving position puts you higher than a Miata. Safety, I don't know. They show this photo a lot:

Did you know that the SL 280 with the Pagoda roof would easily support the weight of the car upside down?

Also Saab cars could be dropped from a height upside down and not suffer roof damage. I know this, because the most knowledgeable car guy on earth demonstrated this! Who might he be? Why Jeremy Clarkson!

BTW, the picture above is a static load. Why I could let an elephant sit on my chest without any problem. The problem would be if he took a flyin' leap!

Smart car = Swatch + Mercedes collaboration on the smart car

and I don't know what y'all's take on this is but... if Mercedes is going to change the naming system of all their cars and build future SLKs under the SLC badge, do you really want to put SLC on the back of your SLK? you bought it as an SLK (170, 171, 172)

C could stand for Classy! That'd be OK with me, but I'm not buying any new or old SLKs. The one I have is good for life!
