No Gas in Atlanta!! Sept SLK Meet Cancelled

The September ATL SLK meet was cancelled or cut short due to lack of Gas in Atlanta!

Dave and I were headed to the southside of Atlanta to meet up at the Atlanta Speedway expecting to find gas on the southside, but no luck so we decided to cut and run while we knew we had enough gas to make it back to our respective garages!

Hopefully we can reschedule soon!!!

Later, Joe

Sorry to hear. At least you were fortunate to scout it out and got advance warning.

Went out this Morning on my motorcycle and found a few stations with regular unleaded only! But cars were lined up out into the streets waiting for there turn!

I need to pick up some octane booster in case I gotta settle for Regular!!!

Is the Atlanta media giving any explanation for this mess? Here in Oklahoma City, we not only have gas, but regular is as low(?) as $3.15. I don't understand this.

Why is there a lack of supply, you live in a quiet a big city. What if there wasnt enough gas for you to put in you car before you head to your daily commute to work ?

I just heard an explanation of this on CNN. According to it, Atlanta and other cities in that area have historically relied upon the refineries on the Gulf coast that were shut down for the last hurricane, and aren't fully back up and ruining. I think it is pure stupidity that this country let this happen. Hurricanes are certainly nothing new, and allowing a major part of the US to rely on refineries located in hurricane-prone areas is just poor planning. Mohamed, it is generally agreed that the US needs more refineries within its borders. We don't have enough. I guess this problem proves it.

Lets see how will the offshore drilling affects the supply, hope it helps.

Well, new offshore drilling here might help, along with oil extraction from shale, tar, and coal. How much new offshore drilling would help is a matter of debate among smarter folks than me! I only know that I used to work in the oil business, and know well that just because you drill, it does not mean you are going to hit any oil. It's a heck of a gamble.

But as I understand it, Atlanta and area is not being hit with a shortage of crude oil, but instead a shortage of refined products such as gasoline. What is obviously needed in the Atlanta area are some refineries in that area (away from hurricane-prone areas) and crude oil pipe lines to those refineries.

Yes, it is realy quite nuts that this is happening. The 55 is not going to move until a proper supply is in place. Joe followed me to make sure we made it and now I probably have less than1 gallon in the tank. Have enough in the daily for 2 trips to work so tommorrow I will bring paperwork back with me with plans to work at home until this straightens out.

I've had relatives in Atlanta, and know (for instance) that the city has the power to literally shut down the town for things like ice storms (no removal equipment there). Atlanta may have to shut down now, this time for a differtent reason. News reports indicate that some schools and colleges have already done so. This is wild -- and all due to failure of anybody to provide refineries to serve this area, other than those in the hurricane-prone gulf coast. Some individuals belong in jail over letting this happen.

You can start with our Gov. Word is that Gov. Purdue is vacationing in Europe with his family while we wait in mile long gas lines. That is if we can find gas!!

Well, it was my understanding (though I am not certain) that the power to shut down employers, schools, and the like that has been used in ice storms is with city government, not state government. I'd be checking that out if I lived there.

Nonetheless, your governor needs to get his rear end home, as the emergency reaches beyond Atlanta -- and even beyond Georgia. Does Georgia have a Lt. Governor who takes over the power when the Governor is away? We do in Oklahoma, I know her personally, and she would jump on this like a duck on a June bug!

That is exactly what is happening - people are calling in sick bc they can't get to work.

ATL has always been known as a commuter city, so the only good that may come out of this is that some people that have started using public transit (as bad as it is around here) may continue to do so after this is all over, which might help our traffic situation.

I have to admit though, I have yet to sit in a line for gas yet, and my wife and I use 3-4 tanks a week between the 2 of us.

Finally made it to work around noon. Tokk over an hour to find gas and then ahour sitting in line. Only 87 octane available and while the Passat's turbo wants 91/93 it's just going to tune itself down for a while. The 55 is sitting until a reliable supply of 93 shows up. What a MESS! And yes, the Gov. is in Europe.

alroumi and all:

I saw a map on CNN that showed where the pipe lines are located that supply gasoline (not crude oil) to Atlanta and area. They all come from refineries located on the Gulf coast, which is hurricane-prone. This was literally a disaster waiting to happen, and it did!

What our members from countries other than the US need to understand is that we have no regulation of the petroleum industry here. This includes the fact that we have no regulations that require that major population areas be served with gasoline from refineries in areas that are NOT prone to hurricane shut-down or other factors requiring shut down. I can say no more, due to the prohibition on this board against making political statements. But I hope I can say that major areas of the US should be served by pipe line with gasoline from more than one source of refineries. So if refineries in one area failed, there would be supplies from refineries in other areas.

I'm guessing there was also a RUN on whatever gas WAS available which of course just makes matter worse.

Yes,that was a big part of the problem along with people topping off every time they saw a station with gas. Getting a little better today but still a PITA!
