Winter in Ottawa Canada..

...and yet there are SLKs to be found!!

Friday, 5pm on Kent street at Laurier (literally in the centre of the big city), a black 172 - it had dropped about 4" of snow that morning!

Saturday, in Westboro, a silver 171 pulling away from the Italian grocery..after an additional inch or so of overnight snow...

Some people believes the SLK will not self destruct with a little cold or snow. Kind of makes you ask what is so different between a SLK and other passenger car that you park it and not drive it. I had a garage queen one time and got rid of it and now think back and find I did not enjoy the use of it as it just set in the garage and I had only enjoyed saying I had a garage queen. I now have a SLK and drive and enjoy it every day. Yes it is good that I live where this is easily possible. The old saying use it or lose it comes to mind.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing Chuck. Was driving the new to me C Class around, at -18C...it is essentially the same car in most respects (even the same engine) with even more LCD screens. But my intent is to keep the 171 for a very very long time, so winter storage has two functions - keeping the car away from all the salt we use up here, and away from the idiots who seem to forget how to drive when the white stuff is around.

Well first I was going to mention our SLK fat tires and then I looked up the "C" and found the tires are the same width. Then I thought of course our lightweight SLKs may be the difference and discovered the weight is similar with "C" weighing a scant 75kg more. OK so ground clearance may be a factor if snow is really deep but that would be extreme.

So ultimately mine stays in the garage for 2 reasons: 1) I want to keep it looking good and am worried about the salt etc used on roads in the winter that would get in and on the car. 2) I took my Corvette out one year too early. It snowed and I slid down a hill into a 40 foot drop ravine and it took a week to pull it out and a month to fix it. No more sports car winter driving for me.

Gordon

PS On the other hand, my very first car was an Austin Healey Sprite that had no top and bald tires and I drove that all year long in Ottawa. Talk about shoveling the driveway; with no top I also had to shovel out the seats to get in. I could have opened the doors and whisked the snow out if the doors had functioned.

Yes I guess keeping it out of salt road ways is something to think about. If the goal is long term keeping it. Then there is the car wash that sprays the undercarriage and has rust protection. When living up north I have used the garden hose with a lawn sprinkle head and to wash the undercarriage by moving it under the car when weather was good.

I have an attachment for the garden hose - meant to clean gutters - produces a wide strong jet in an arc.. should be good for the wheel arches and chassis on both cars. Attaboy Chuck!

I realize my chemistry is somewhat lacking but doesn't cold+water=ice? So you would be about 3 months Dec, Jan, Feb when you cannot use water outside unless creating a skating rink?

Yes can only do this when weather is good, above freezing. In Canada what month is that?
