Just finished before the rain..! lol Worth every penny, makes the car what it should have been from the factory..!

It is a plug and play item. Suggest you update the firmware and select your options using your pc before installing it in the car. Get a 4 foot USB cable and leave it attached and run it into the pocket on the back wall for a future update of your selections if decide to make changes. There is a hole in the wall and an X cut in the inside center of the pocket to run the USB. A lot of items that you remove to get to the plugs take the time to remove and re-install. The Mods4cars instructions are very good that makes it simple.

Detailed function description (Factory setting underlined)
Function 1 - MODULE MODE + MASTER SWITCH ( 0=OFF / 1=ON / 2=EXT / 3=EXP )

The module can quickly and easily be enabled and disabled using this function. It acts like a master switch. When disabled, the module becomes completely inactive and behaves as if it was not installed while keeping all other function settings intact for when it is re-enabled later.

• Setting 1 is the regular operation mode with emphasis on safety. Turning the ignition on or off as well as hitting any button on the remote at any time during remote operation immediately stops an ongoing top operation.
• Setting 2 is the extended operation mode with emphasis on convenience. Starting or stopping the engine will not stop a top operation and it is possible to lock or unlock the doors one time from the remote while the top is moving.
• Setting 3 is the operation mode designed for responsible experts. It allows the doors to be locked and unlocked more than once. This can come in handy if after getting out and locking the doors something was forgotten in the car and needs to be retrieved while the top is still running.

Settings 2 and 3 require extra responsibility and caution to avoid injury by moving top parts to passengers not expecting the top to continue running after the engine is turned off and due to the fact that the first key press on the remote to lock or unlock the doors (or continued toggling of the door locks) will not stop the top! To abort the operation, press unlock while the doors are unlocked or lock while they are locked.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: In order to avoid problems with diagnostic tools and to avoid confusion or risk of injury by unexpected top movement, we urge you to ALWAYS DISABLE the module before taking the car in for routine maintenance or lending it to a third person! In case of any top malfunction NEVER take the car with the module still installed to an unsuspecting dealer! In such cases ALWAYS contact Mods4Cars for support first at www.mods4cars.com or completely uninstall the module before a dealer visit.

Function 2 - Console Switch One-Touch ( 0=OFF / 1=ON / 2=VALET )

This function allows full automatic top operation using the console switch.

• Setting 1 enables One-Touch operation and comfort close for all windows.
• Setting 2 disables opening of the top (Valet Mode), even from the remote!

IMPORTANT: Setting 2 disables top operation completely! If the top unexpectedly does not work, check and make sure VALET mode is not turned on.

Top operation with the console switch:
• Holding down the switch (longer than 1 sec) in either direction will operate the top in manual mode for as long as the switch is held.
• Tap open 1x: Open the top and bring the windows into the programmed position.
• Tap open 2x: Open the top and bring the windows into the opposite position this one time.
• Tap close 1x: Close top and windows.
• Tap close 2x: Close only the top and leave the windows open.

Comfort close for all windows:
• Tap the top close switch while the top is already closed to roll all windows up.

To interrupt an ongoing operation: Tap the console switch in any direction at any time (ignition must be on!) - even if the top was started by remote!

Function 3 - Console Switch Invert ( 0=OFF / 1=ON )

This function allows reversing the direction of the console switch.

• Setting 1 activates reversed direction operation.

Function 4 - Maximum Speed ( 0=0 km/h / 1=10 km/h / 2=20 km/h / 3=30 km/h / 4=40 km/h / 5=50 km/h / 6=60 km/h )

This function determines the desired speed limit for top operation via console switch.

• Setting 0 only allows roof operation while halted.
• Setting 1 and up increase the speed for top operation in steps of 10km/h (~7mph).

We recommend to keep the speed as low as possible and only operate the top on even and smooth street surfaces!
Once the top is started within the programmed speed limit, it will continue running, even if the speed later exceeds the limit during the top operation!

Function 5 - Remote Top ( 0=OFF / 1=ON )

This function allows full automatic top operation with the original remote fob by pressing the lock and unlock buttons.

• Setting 1 allows opening and closing of the top by tapping the unlock and lock buttons on the remote multiple times.
• If closing the top triggers an alarm, an alternate sequence can be used to close the top.

Top operation with the remote fob using TAPS:
• Tap unlock 3x in 1 sec intervals: Open the top and bring the windows into the programmed position.
• Tap unlock 4x in 1 sec intervals: Open the top and bring the windows into the opposite position this one time.
• Tap lock 3x in 1 sec intervals: Close top and windows.
• Tap lock 4x in 1 sec intervals: Close only the top while leaving the windows down.
• Tap unlock 3x in 1 sec intervals: Close top and windows. (Alternate operation)
• Tap unlock 4x in 1 sec intervals: Close only the top while leaving the windows down. (Alternate operation)

To interrupt an ongoing operation: Tap unlock or lock again. IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that Extended and Expert modes allow one time change (or multiple changes) of the door locks! In such case a second key press on the same button will be necessary to stop the top.

Function 6 - Remote Windows ( 0=OFF / 1=ON )

This function allows separate control of the windows with the original remote fob by pressing the lock and unlock buttons.

• Setting 1 allows opening and closing of the windows by tapping the unlock and lock buttons on the remote multiple times.

Window operation with the remote fob using TAPS:
• Tap unlock 2x in 1 sec intervals: Open all windows.
• Tap lock 2x in 1 sec intervals: Close all windows.

Function 7 - Keyless Top ( 0=OFF / 1=CLOSE ONLY / 2=OPEN/CLOSE )

This function allows to close and open the convertible top by touching the door handle (requires Keyless Entry option!)

• Setting 1 only allows closing the top.
• Setting 2 allows closing and opening.

Top operation with the Keyless Entry door handle:
• Tap thumb on lock sensor 2x in 1 sec intervals, then hold hand inside door handle: Open the top and bring the windows into the programmed position.
• Tap thumb on lock sensor 3x in 1 sec intervals: Close top and windows.
• Tap thumb on lock sensor 4x in 1 sec intervals: Close only the top while leaving the windows down.

• To get in the car without interrupting the opening top, grab the door handle and open the door quickly.
• Make sure to leave about 2 seconds between taps and that there is a clicking sound after each tap. Otherwise the input was not recognized.

To stop an ongoing operation: Tap the lock sensor again. Keep in mind that Extended and Expert modes allow the doors to be locked while the top continues. In such case tap the lock sensor a second time.

Function 8 - Window positions after opening top ( 0=NONE / 1=FRONT / 2=ALL )

This function determines the position of the windows after an automatic top opening run.

• Setting 0 leaves all windows down.
• Setting 1 raises the front windows only.
• Setting 2 raises all windows.

Function 9 - Window switch One-Touch ( 0=OFF / 1=ON / 2=NO IGNITION )

This function allows to program the all-windows switch in the center console to raise all windows using One-Touch. By factory this switch only offers One-Touch down.
On the SLK it extends operation by allowing the rear windows to be operated with the top down. The behavior of the rear windows is now the same as on the SLC from the factory.

• Setting 0 allows closing of all windows on the SLK by pulling and holding the switch (front windows close first, then rear). Exactly like SLC factory behavior.
• Setting 1 allows One-Touch closing of all windows with the ignition on (on the SLK also with the top down).
• Setting 2 additionally allows closing all windows with the switch after turning off the ignition (even with open doors!).

To close all windows at the same time, pull this switch up briefly and let go. To interrupt an operation, tap the switch again in any direction.

Function 10 - Hazard flashers ( 0=OFF / 1=ON / 2=ALT )

This function activates the flashers (on some models only side mirrors and/or rear) during remote controlled top operation or when the top continues running after the ignition has been turned off.

• Setting 1 flashes the blinkers similar to the regular emergency flashing signal.
• Setting 2 flashes the blinkers in a left-right alternating pattern.

Function 11 - Chirps ( 0=OFF / 1=LOCK / 2=UNLOCK / 3=LOCK/UNLOCK )

This function activates brief signals when unlocking or locking using either the horn.

• Setting 1 activates a shorn horn beep when locking.
• Setting 2 activates a shorn horn beep when unlocking.
• Setting 3 activates short horn signals when locking or unlocking.

Function 12 - Folding Mirrors ( 0=OFF / 1=TAP / 2=ALWAYS )

This function allows remote folding of the motorized mirrors on demand. The mirrors always fold back out when opening any door.

• Setting 1 will fold the mirrors in by tapping the trunk button on the remote twice briefly.
• Setting 2 will fold the mirrors in automatically when locking the car. It is recommended to use the factory provided setting for this (see below)!

Most models already have a setting in the convenience menu that allows a folding mirror setting to be activated. If it is desired that the mirrors always fold when the car is locked, we recommend using the factory setting and leaving this function disabled!

Function 13 - Comfort Wipers ( 0=OFF / 1=1x / 2=2x )

This function activates a delayed wipe cycle after using the sprayers. This way any running water drops will be automatically removed.

• Setting 1 wipes once after 10 seconds.
• Setting 2 wipes twice in intervals of 10 seconds.

Function 14 - ECO Mode Auto-OFF ( 0=OFF / 1=MEMORY / 2=ON )

This function allows automatic deactivation of the "Eco Mode" (auto stop/start) when starting the car. By factory this setting reverts to ON every time the car is started.
IMPORTANT: This function can only turn the separate ECO BUTTON (auto stop/start) off which is present in newer models. It does not change the "drive mode" setting of the car.

• Setting 1 memorizes the last used setting and restores it when starting the car. It can be toggled manually later using the ECO button.
• Setting 2 turns the ECO mode off shortly after starting the engine. It can be activated manually later using the ECO button.

Function 15 - Park Assist ( 0=OFF / 1=SWITCH / 2=RIGHT / 3=LEFT )

This function automatically lowers one of the mirrors when shifting into reverse which makes it a lot easier to see the curb or other obstacles.

• Setting 1 only lowers the passenger mirror when needed. Activated by tapping the mirror switch.
• Setting 2 always lowers the right mirror.
• Setting 3 always lowers the left mirror.

Operation and activation of the mirror when using setting 1:
• Before parking tap the passenger mirror selector switch. When shifting into reverse, the mirror will lower.
• The selection is lost after a short time (factory behavior) and needs to be reactivated before shifting into reverse next time.

IMPORTANT: This function is meant only for models WITHOUT factory seat memory. The seat memory option automatically comes with a park assist function in which case this function should stay disabled.

Function 16 - Calibration ( 0=-4 / 1=-3 / 2=-2 / 3=-1 / 4=0 / 5=+1 / 6=+2 / 7=+3 / 8=+4 )

This function is for calibrating the park assist feature. Since vehicles without the factory seat memory option do not have position encoders or memory in the mirror motors, our park assist feature has to rely on precise timing only. Unfortunately some inaccuracy is unavoidable. Unfortunately some inaccuracy is unavoidable. In some cases the mirror may return too high or too low.
This calibration value helps in finding a timing that returns the mirror to a position that is close enough to the original position. The higher the setting is programmed here, the higher the position is the mirror will return to.

Function 17 - Drive Mode ( 0=OFF / 1=MEMORY )

This function automatically switches the drive mode back to where it was when turning the ignition on. By factory the car forgets the setting once turned off.
IMPORTANT: This function only works on newer models where the mode select button is in the upper console close to the AC controls and has NO EFFECT on older models, where the selector button is in the center console by the gear selector.

• Setting 1 remembers and activates the last used drive mode.

1st ? do you have park assist as an option?

func 15 This function automatically lowers one of the mirrors when shifting into reverse which makes it a lot easier to see the curb or other obstacles.

you will have to test func 16 for best 'fit'

func 16 In some cases the mirror may return too high or too low.
This calibration value helps in finding a timing that returns the mirror to a position that is close enough to the original position.

Yes, it comes with a USB cable. I wanted a longer one where it would give me more room to move around with the PC and not deal with a short cable.

I like the chirp lock and unlock, windows up top-down, rear quarter windows up also, flashing light when top opens or close, one-touch on top, and windows on the center console buttons. I do keep the speed set for something in the '20s. There is a lot of pressure on the top and support parts when opening while moving.

Just an update and consideration for all the ones buying from Europe directly on mods4cars.com site. I am waiting to receive the SmartTop from USA although I received an extra charge of 70e for duty TAX. I was not aware therefore in the end price is around 370e if sent to Europe from USA.
Ain't a cheap mod, hope is worth the cost and extra fee. 🤔

could you suggest on Function 1 please...

I was thinking about setting 3 but not sure...do you think 2 is safer? how setting 3 may really become handy in your experience....
Thank you

setting 2 is what I have
this way, one can pull into a parking spot and one touch the roof button on console, turn off car and walk away. roof will continue to close with engine off. The car can then be locked with the remote as u r walking away and roof is finishing closing. Looks really cool. try not to look back at it :D :D

Great thanks for your suggestion I also set up Function 1, with value 2.

Function 8 I've set to 0 like the original function.
Function 9, I am thinking about it, did not really understood the main advantage of it...mine is SLK not SLC  , maybe value 2?
Function 10...are the hazard blinkers a cool thing?

For the remainder function I am ok I think, for max speed I left value 4 (40kmh) which seems reasonable although maybe to high....

• Setting 2 flashes the blinkers in a left-right alternating pattern.

of course setting 0 is for when you take it in to be serviced so no one accidentally presses the remote and roof opens or closes when it is NOT supposed to

I have the original ST so i don't have the 16 + functions newer STs have

8=0
slk slc is same car just a name change really
10 i have off 0

#35 · (Edited)
I installed ST in 2013 and removed it to reinstall in 2019. Everything is the same and the only problem is the speaker wires on 2013 just popped loose. On 2019 could not get the speaker wires to come loose so just worked around them, there is enough room on the short wires to do this. Now that I have done it three times can do it in like 30 minutes.

Some hints: Be careful and do not drop any screws that can fall behind the carpet on the bulkhead, can be very hard to get them back. With all the screws you will need to remove you do need a power screwdriver. There is a hole in the center of the metal panel and an X is cut in the carpet that you run the USB cable into the pocket on the wall. The pocket is removed by pulling the top edge toward the outside of the car, when they come loose then just pull up on the pocket.

Speaker connectors and the posterior parking sensor connector appear very stiff (maybe some WD40 can help?)...also the posterior central speaker grille appears to be not very solid, and it's "plastic pegs" tend to brake easily. A pic of mine with a broken one on the left...do not know if I broke it or was already broken...

@Windinmyhair & @jbanks15

Just a maybe silly question...today I was checking that the roof mechanism was working correctly prior to install the SmartTop in the next weeks, and i have noticed that for my car the roof operates driving at low speeds...is this normal? Shouldn't work/operate just when the car is in park mode? Any chance that I have already a smart top fitted by the previous owner and I didn't know it?

newer r172s can go about 10-20 mph

older slks only:
Via Vario Roof switch (S84s1) – Trunk partition and trunk lid must be closed – Vehicle speed must be <3 mph
