Talking Ebay WindRestrictor Find - Yay!

Happy days! I was visiting my brother in Washington DC, "I wonder if there's anything on USA Ebay for my SLK350? What's this, a genuine windrestrictor.com screen? No bidders? Really?".

I'd looked at Windrestrictors before and although they looked great, the cost for me was "too much buck for the bang"! To import a new one from USA to the UK, it would be $279 (£214) for the plain version, another $79 USD (£60) postage and another £55 duty/VAT from UK customs, a total of £329 which I was NOT prepared to pay. I was delighted to get mine of USA eBay for £113 ($150 USD) including $37 expedited delivery from Texas. It's in absolute mint condition and even came with the original bottle of cleaner. 5 screws out and it's all flat and bubble wrapped inside my case. Can't wait to get back and fit it.

Can I mod it to the LED version by running a strip of LEDS underneath? Does anyone know if the mounting bracket is the same or different for the LED/Non LED versions?

Don't think the bracket is different. If you need to add LED strips, we sell them. Be careful with the type you get, not all fit. Also, if it wasn't made for being lit up, it won't look as good. We have a special method for trapping the light in.

@Windrestrictor Thanks for the reply. Having got a 2nd hand unit off ebay, I'm delighted with it. It really is a quality item. The edges of the thick perspex are all nicely polished and the custom base for the SLK R172 looks sturdy yet unobtrusive.

For those of you who bought a plain unit and wish you'd got the light up version, you can easily do it, either by getting the LED strips from @windrestictor or you may want to go DIY.

Having got the unit back to the UK and unpacked it, I can see that there's a notch cut into the perspex that allows an LED strip to be seated underneath the screen. The wire pokes out of the ready made hole easily. I had several strips of RGB LED strip of different sizes, so I found a narrower strip and it was a good fit. As @windrestictor says, they have a method of maximising the light in their own version. I could experiment with some reflective material in the channel, but in all honesty I prefer a subtle effect anyway. To get to the photo took 10 minutes including finding the right bits in the garage. I had an IR RGB controller so I spent 5 minutes with all kinds of horrible changing light effects and colours before reverting to a single colour for the photo.

In all probability, I won't run it with the LEDs even though it all seems to work very well. Hope this helps someone.

Lightbulb And the finished results...

I fitted an RGBW LED strip with an IR remote control from my bits box into the existing bracket. I ran a +12v from the cigarette lighter supply, hid all of the wires and poked out the IR receiver from the base of the rear speaker housing. It's barely visible.

It's probably a bit garish for my taste with all of the colours, 'just because you can, doesn't mean you should'! I certainly won't be using any of the flashing/fade/blink/colour change features but I may keep it on 25% red to match my existing interior though.

Thanks for the comments guys. After driving it in the dark a couple of times, I'm very happy with how it turned out, though I do have the brightness turned down. I'm really impressed with the quality of the @Windrestrictor, it's rock solid and I love being able ot see out of the back, especially at night!
