This is incredibly frustrating... I have the right A-pillar cover, both little plastic bolt covers, but the remaining left A-pillar cover came yesterday (part number A1716980789) without any hole for the cover. Did the dealership send the wrong part or does that part number not have a hole? If anybody can confirm, I'd appreciate it If it's the latter, can someone confirm the correct number?

In the meantime I have 1.5 sides ready for painting, and a conversation in the pipeline with a German dealership about returning an A-pillar cover I have no use for. Grr....

Alternatively... does anybody need a new left A-pillar cover?

Number is correct according EPC. They send you the wrong item I'm afraid. Alas, no need for an A-pillar cover...

It may be weird to drive roof down with bikes on a rack above ( or Kayak ),
but if there is a surfboard up there, topless is the only way to go.
We’ll be needing a picture of it !

Someone will lend you a surfboard. ( I’ve read about keen surfers in Ireland,,,,with really good wetsuits)

When these cars are 50 year old classics, the roof rack system will be one of the must-have accessories,
along with the
OEM illuminated door sills, yellow, blue or green,
OEM reverse park sensors, “Quickparc”
OEM Coolbag for food,
OEM polyethylene trunk liner,

Heh, yeah there's a big surf scene here, mostly on the west coast- I'm not a surfer but have a few friends who partake. Maybe I can recreate this:

If I lived in Southern California I might chance hauling stuff roof-down but in an Atlantic weather system it's a bit optimistic

@Sneaky Pete just to save my sanity and before I get into a long-winded discussion with dealer to return said A-pillar, can I just confirm again that if I'm looking for a left, short A-pillar valid for option 726 I should be asking for A1716980789? Asking because your EPC screenshot had A1716980389 highlighted in the background, and the part they sent me had the MB A1716980789 sticker stuck directly on top of an MB sticker for A1716980389. I'll dig out a photo...

@Sneaky Pete maybe it's coincidence, but if you see the label underneath:

Not trying to muddy the waters, but I remember reading here some time ago that some of these items were no longer available, but what I don’t recall is if that was for R170 or R171, If the one for the bars were unavailable the standard one becomes the replacement, but it would be odd to put the wrong part number sticker on it.
For M-B to not keep such a low volume part after so long would be unsurprising. To do another small batch , find the tool, create the order, clean tool, get correct material grade, start machine, turn off machine minutes later,,,,,,, is pretty unlikely.
Mercedes has remarkable part supply for old models.

Is there any way you can cut the hole accurately in the standard piece?

Yes,0789 would be the short one. 0389 is the long one. I just clicked on 0389 to get the 726 option in a popup window. That's the reason it is highlighted. Not to highlight the correct part. 01/02 and 05/0689 are the short and long panels to use WITHOUT the rack. 03/0489 and 07/0889 are the short and long ones for use WITH the rack. All according EPC that is. Assuming EPC is correct someone messed up with stickers/packaging I think. Otherwise I have no explanation.

And to confirm, dug up the datacard from my old 280 that had the option for the roof rack and it showed optioncode 726. So 726 IS the correct option to look for in selecting the partnr for correct cover.
A talk with the dealer is in order I think.

I would take that back, in the bag, to whoever sold it to you, point out the two labels and part numbers, and ask them to order another one, this time with just one label

And to give you some ammo in your talk with the dealer here's a printout of EPC based on the VIN of my old 280 that had option 726 for roof rack mounting.
As far as I can tel 0789 is the correct partnr.

@Sneaky Pete thanks for all the insight, had a chat with local Irish main dealer today who unusually returned my call (Irish customer service is improving I guess!) and confirmed there is plenty of stock in Germany. 5 working days apparently. Let's call it 10 to be on the safe side since I'm in the emerald Isle

German dealer agreed to refund upon return of pillar which is on the way.

Now we're in business- returned incorrect pillar, new one arrived today from local dealership (at a whopping €152!) so that completes the front:

Took everything to get painted today so maybe, just maybe I'll have it all back before the long weekend...

All done!

Thanks to everyone here for the technical assistance & general support, thrilled to finally have the weirdest and rarest option of all

Got the painted parts back from the shop today:

Left cover on:

Removing the rail that holds the trim on was one of the biggest pains of this whole retrofit- they're both delicate and stubborn

I got straight into mounting the bars. First up, the installation kit comes with these clear plastic protectors to stick on between the rear mount and the bodywork around the rivet:

Next the lower bars- I won't lie, getting the front and back lined up is a bit fiddly but eventually I got them on:

Next the cross bars- they slot and then screw neatly into slots on the lowers. The screws are covered up by the locking end-caps when everything's installed:

There's a depth of engineering to these things which makes me think they must've been total loss-leaders; engineers having fun during the DaimlerChrysler era. The quality of the castings and the little engravings everywhere is something you rarely see even on 'premium' aftermarket carriers.

I'm going away this weekend so I'll try and grab some more pics but here are a few more teasers in the interim:

Thanks again y'all
