Climatronic Retrofit... (Digital Climate Control)

Hi All

Been quiet here for a while due to work commitments - flying in the rain!! (or not, as the case has been on a few days here..)

Anyway, finally located and today installed the digital climate control module for the 55...

Before and after pics attached - looks a LOT nicer, and has the benefit of the 'Auto' function too - much more like it (had this in the previous GTV, and it took a bit to get used to fiddling with manual controls again!!)

Also, whilst bits were out...

* -- I relocated the Alpine GPS antenna so it's now in the correct 'place' behind the rear view mirror housing (thanks to those on the forum who've previously documented this) - much tidier now,

* -- I finished of the DVB TV Tuner install (3rd pic) - the TV Module sits nicely in the front electronics bay (there is LOADS of room in there for stuff!)

Still on the list to do..

Power folding mirrors - still need the console switch and passenger mirror mechanism (have the drivers side)

Going to add the sun / IR sensor that goes with the Climatronic system to the dash - need the centre vent with this in as wiring is now in place for it..

Anyone with these parts going spare, or any info on anyone who has would be grateful - looking in the 'usual places' already.

The centre vent can also include the Parktronic display as I plan to retrofit this too (sucker for punishment!)....

And finally, one for John I'd imagine - having fitted the Climatronic panel I understand power needs to be removed from the car to reset the air outlet flap positions - is there a fuse that can be removed instead of a full disconnect (just trying to save time and hassle!!)

Cheers all...

... ok ... bit the bullet and disconnected the battery ... reset all of the Sound stuff after reconnecting, reset the clock and window positions - all functioning normally.

All vent positions seem to function as expected when selected with the right control wheel, fan speeds increase / decrease as expected with the left control wheel, temperature goes up and down with the buttons on both sides, front and rear demist works as expected... all in all, it seems ok...

Reading elsehwhere, it seems that others have had to set the temperature lower than displayed to get the temperature they 'actually' want - seems to be the same here too.

Only snag is that the AC, whilst still cold, doesn't seem to be quite as 'icy cold' as before... (it's only 19 - 20 degrees outside - does the car control the amount of AC based on the outside temperature at all..?)

Aything else to reset / tell its there / tweak regarding the panel change..?

Cheers

.... Investigation continues...

Refit the original 4 dial control panel, and all functions work as expected, except that I get icy cold air from the vents when the temperature dial(s) is set to cold . Pressing the AC off (rest) button seems to stop the compressor and warmer air is now pumped throught the vents

Refitting the Digital Control and all functions work (vents, speeds, demist etc etc ) but when set to LO, its still the same coolish air (same as above with the AC off button pressed). Pressing the AC off button on this panel seems to make no change to the temperature - it just turns the red led on!!

Of to the Indy tomorrow - remember reading something on here about stored codes backing up and stopping the AC from functioning correctly ( sounds odd to me, especially as the original 4 dial panel works correctly, but we'll see)

Always a posibility that the Digital Control panel is faulty I suppose.. just seems odd that every thing works EXCEPT (seemingly) the signal to fire up the compressor...

Any thoughts welcome....

Cheers

Hey Sean - have them "reset to factory" the A/C controller, and see if it fixes the icy cold issue. If not, there is a calibration adaptation as I recall, but I don't have access to Star at the moment - I should week after next...

..booked in next week for a code read and programming if needed - the visit was complete with comments along the lines of ' It won't work - they're different systems....'

Be interesting to see if the visit sorts things out...

Unless any other ideas pop up regarding other reset methods or things to try I'll post back after the visit...

...Just a thought... not tried it yet, but may have a go tomorrow...

When I fitted the Digital panel, I still had the battery connected (ignition off)

Searching and reading today brings up a post that says

Disconnect battery, remove 4 dial panel, fit digital panel and reconnect battery - apparently to normalise the flap positions...

I had no probs with flap positions, airflow, recirc, tunnel mode etc etc, just the A/C not kicking in..

Does the battery really need disconnecting BEFORE the change over..?

Old panel back in for now (left battery connected, ignition off) as I'm headed for a trip to the folks and cound do with the A/C functioning... as expected, coneecting the original panel back in brings the A/C back into play...

...until tomorrow...

Cheers

Replaced my 4 dial unit with a digital one on a 06 SLK280. Works as it should. I did disconnect the battery. Hopefully you can get it sorted out at the dealer.

...All sorted...

Codes read and cleared - there was a Ballast Error code - the chap said it was probably caused by NOT disconencting the battery when changing the panels.

Anyway, all codes cleared - a few explanations as to why I wanted it and what I was doing with the car (he was getting a parktronic fault showing as the upper control panel has the PTS button, but not PTS is fitted, yet....

AC is now icy cold as before, auto functions correctly now it can use the AC to cool the air.... wahey...!

Advice to those doing this - DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE CHANGING THE PANELS OVER - it's been said before... I didn't as I was trying to save a few minutes!

On a seperate note, I also asked to have TELEPHONE = PRESENT set in the CGW module, but the tech couldn't find it (He went through the menus with me to show me that it wasn't there...) - this throws a question for John - Where should he be looking..?? - I went throught the CGW module with him and there was nothing for phone prep visible...

Cheers
Sean

Evening all...

Another update ...

The pollution sensor arrived in todays post - a whole 16 euros....
Whilst not needed for the retrofit, it was throwing errors in DAS as it wasn't present so I decided to go about sourcing a cheap one and fitting it.

Pics show ....

The sensor before fitting
The sensor on a fabricated bracket (it didn't come with one, and a phone call to the local dealer resulted in a 'Lets have your VIN, sorry it's not fitted to your car' conversation, even though I gave him the correct part number...
The sensor (on it's bracket) fitted in the battery compartment - the bracket will do till I can source the correct one
Final pic shows only two faults in DAS - the missing sun sensor (still trying to source) and the missing flaps - I'll not bother with those as it's a dashboard out job...!

Total time to fit, including making the bracket - 35 minutes

A big thanks goes ot to this post https://www.slkworld.com/general-modi...-upgrades.html - all of the info I needed was on it, even down to the location of the 'hidden' pollution sensor cable

Cheers for now
Sean

About the only thing I would like is the seat recline setting sorted. My seat back is at least 5 inches away from the bulkhead but the setup will not let me recline any more. John said he would do it but we didnt get much chance on the sheep hunt
