BestBuy installed sub now I have gas smell!

Yesterday Bestbuy installed subwoofer behind passenger seat and this morning I small gas in the car, especially if I smell near the seat belt holder.

Wondering if coincidence or if there is a possibility of them screwing into gas tank!

Heading back to their store in a few hrs to show them.

Based on this pic I'd say there is a good chance they did. Just a guess though.

It may not be the screws but the drill they drilled the holes with.

There is a ORVR vent hose in that area as well - it gets involved during refueling. Did you refuel since the install? Either way - not very reassuring.

No I've not refused since the subwoofer install.

I get back in the car and the smell has pretty much gone! When i put my nose up to the seat belt holder there is no smell at all! So I drove it with the roof and windows up for 15 miles, parked it up for 20 minutes and asked the wife to confirm if I'm going mad! She agreed, there is no smell of gas in the car...???

Early this morning when I drove to work about 13 miles, my dad confirmed the smell of gas when I pulled up at the office and he removed the gas cap and refitted I'm starting to working the the subwoofer install was just coincidental.

Either way I'm taking up to a local mechanic next Thursday that has been working on Mercedes for about 40 years and has a great reputation, hopefully he can put my mind to rest. Thanks for all the replies!

Just a thought - have you checked under the car for any tell-tale drips of fuel at all? Or even a visual inspection behind the rear bulkhead where the sub was installed to see if you can see the screws they used and if there are any 'damp' patches on the fuel tank??

Best of luck with this - not an easy thing to have to diagnose...

I think I spoke too soon, I just moved the car from the driveway into the garage and I can smell the gas from the seatbelt area.

Thanks for the tips I've performed the following:

Parked inside the garage last night and it was bone try with no smell of gas in the air.
Parked on driveway for 2 hrs and it was dry as a bone under the car.
Visually looked under car and could not see any damp spots.
Interior is dry patted down all carpet area and no gas smell on hands.

I have an appointment with a tech this upcoming Thursday I'm going and this job over to them, will update the thread after I get an update from the pros.

I think it's safe to say that any fuel leak due to a puncture through the bulkhead would accumulate in the boot. So the strongest odor would occur when you open the boot.

There is zero odor in the boot, almost all the odor is coming from where the seat belt disappears over the shoulder.

I did use for Techron fuel system cleaner the week before, is it possible that could have caused an issue? I think the gas cap looks a little work too, will buy a new one to play it safe it.

Just received a call from the installer and he confirmed that he did screw into the gas tank and has repair with some type of epoxy, hopefully this brings an end to one stressful thing in my life!

get admission in writing for future issues with the 'repair'

To my surprise they treated we really well, from what I read online I thought I was going to be in for a drawn out fight. The removed the old XM commander I no longer needed and believe it or not the new head unit was defective from Crutchfield, so they removed it for me and agreed to install the new replacement one free of charge too.

I opened a case with Best Buy corporate so I do have it online as an admission of error on their part.
