Panoramic Roof (mod) for R170

Hello Everyone

(first post)

I've done some searching online and on this forum and while I much about panoramic roofs for later SLKs, I found nothing for the R170 range. Has anyone done/investigated this? Is it even possible? Any ideas on price for such a mod?

Any advice or help would be appreciated....

Hi Charl, did you ever find any information on this?

Looking at a parts list, it seems to have mouldings along each edge and then the outer skin and headliner forming it into the 'box structure' for the roof without any cables, wires or anything else across the middle of the 'box' area. So I guess if you had the outer skin cut out and the same done to the headliner then you could turn it into a panoramic roof, i expect the glass would be expensive, unless you found a part from a different vehicle with a panoramic roof to fit?

If you take out the headliner ( a ten minute job) you'll see there is nothing in the way ( see Pelican Parts for photos too)

Getting a piece of polycarbonate (Lexan is one brand name) cut to size would be no problem and if not too thick (2mm,3mm?) it might bend to the curve.
I'd do this first because until there is a really good match to the roof surface, it won't work.
Unfortunately most of the curve is for-aft on the short side. But there is too much lateral curvature to ignore.

Getting a second roof panel from a wreckers would be a good idea as it could be used as a mold to 'blow' the polycarbonate into, and then be used to trial the sealing method before firing to your car.

The job of properly sealing the transparent part to the metal roof panel in a way that looks good and doesn't look like a 1980s after-market pop up sun roof will be a real job.
To use a generic seal strip means two ends and a gap or a join, and tight corners to get around. It might never work.
Manufacturers with the money to spend tens of thousands of dollars on tooling each part, simply avoid these issues that become insurmountable for us.

Making a fibreglass headliner using the old one as a mold and then modifying from there, is just a matter of putting in a lot of man-hours.

If the car is driven everyday, the sealing has to be perfect and this is the big challenge. If the car is driven only on sundays, is it worth the effort?

I like the idea of the Panoramic roof but in the Australian climate, one would get roasted in summer without an insulated blind. So very few are ordered here.
I think I have only seen 1 or maybe 2 advertised for sale in the last few years.

I would have thought Cape Town would also be too hot for this mod.

Thanks for the responses, guys

Pictor: a special thanks for the detailed way in which you replied.

About the sun: you are correct, but ... sunroof! LOL

I am just looking into options and daydreaming a bit on what can't/shouldn't be done when choosing mods. You have to know whats possible before finding yourself with a bin of bits a no way to put it all back together again.

There is also a case of 'my R170 can do what your R171/R172 can' at play here.

I am growing in appreciation for the differences between the different releases, though.
