SLK 230K R170 Project Vehicle 2016/2017

Ahoy,

I bought this car several weeks ago and I've loved every day I've owned it, while behind the wheel, at work but secretly planning improvements, or just getting my hands dirty underneath it.
It was a fairly clean example of a low-milage 2004 Mercedes but it still had the usual vices expected of a car kept in wet climates and around busy streets:

Paint de-lamination on panel edges, surface rust across most exposed metal components, a couple of tiny door dings, long overdue for a real service... the usual stuff.

In this time I've made the following modifications:

Bought a private plate
Front grille swapped for split bar design and 85mm front badge
16 inch Borbet 5 spoke (split) wheels with Merc center caps
Falken Z rated tires
Broke back and painted original calipers
EBC Redstuff pads
Debadge
Window tinted black to maximum legal limit (Limo rear and quarters, 75% light pass on sides)
Halo ring lamp units (E-marked and road legal)
Black Diamond G12 vented front and rear brake discs
Back box/secondary cat deletion, replaced with lightweight pipe and 4 inch tip
K&N cone filter and superior air induction kit
Performance-oriented ECU remap and rev limiter removal
Supercharger pulley kit
Fiberglass VMAX hood
Fiberglass VMAX wings

I'll continue to update this thread with pictures and later work. It'll help keep me organised, busy and out of trouble if nothing else.
I've owned much heavier V6 cars in the past and I'm enjoying taking a smaller (but much lighter) 4 cylinder in-line in this direction. Any advice on bugbears, things to avoid, or just general waffle from more experienced SLK owners is of course welcome.

Have a good week.

Hi,
Do you mind if I ask where you got the split bar grille and VMAX hood and wings from and were they an easy fit?

Thanks,

Dez

Hi Dez,

I bought the grille on eBay, from some German auto parts company I can't recall. Searching for 'SLK R170 grille' throws a lot up. It's an easy 5 minute fit for any of them, though do check the front badge if you decide to go 85mm. Mine took some very minor dremel machining to get it to sit perfect during assembly.

The bonnet came from UNQSHOP and the wings from Maxton Design.
Fibreglass parts always arrive rough and require a lot of prep work prior to test fitting. Fortunately the fit was good on both, however the wings do not have a front mounting lip for your top headlight bolt. Both sides required two small shelf extensions to be fabricated in order to properly fit the headlights. Let me know if you need a pic and I'll take one during daylight.

Thanks again.
I'm currently contemplating a small spoiler to balance out the rear asthetic and I'm fitting a perspex wind breaker tomorrow. It never ends.

Hmm, maybe not super small... but nothing too over the top. I know spoilers are hit and miss at the best of times but I think I've found one that keeps relatively low to the boot and still follows the curving lines of the rear quarter. It's neither a wee duck lip or a massive blackbird wing, but for something wholly cosmetic (and let's be honest... 99% of spoilers are) I'm still sort of on the fence.

Jet black rear and mid brake lights, with red LEDs, arrive soon also.

Most of England is feeling the cold November rain but today was a rare exception.
Here are a couple of pics including some recent modifications.

I've added an RDX Racing Design spoiler. This spoiler is geometry compatible and cast solid.
This was an easy fit and only required minor machining on the boot side, which kept things flush and tidy.
If you're not a wing person; sorry chum. Seems I'm quite taken with them on wedge design coupes.

Black lense LED lights are in. Dated blurry red units are in the spare parts box.

No stickers or cheesy light patterns, just black on black, on black, etc.
I've machine buffed the whole car to a black pearl finish as I can get it.
Better view of the rear screen and back box deletion also.

More to follow on sprint buttons and diagnostics. In the mean time I'll keep killing dolled up hatchbacks.
Enjoy the weekend, folks.

Oh yeah! How could I forget this magical thing?

I configured this bad boy to my preferences and got it plugged into the brain box, even if the wires did make me sweat a little.
Splicing the wires and triple checking everything was the most time consuming part... otherwise it was a piece of cake.

Still one, maybe two, small jobs to do before I'd be 100% happy with my submission. I'll check the thread and see how far along the ball is.
