My SLK230 Project

Okay, I bought my 1997 SLK230 a few months ago and it was absolutely stock, no modifications. I could buy a newer model, I am one of those people who really enjoy tinkering and modding and so for various reasons this car is perfect.

The chassis, engine and interior are in excellent condition and the car only has 80k miles, however there are a few things which need sorting, hence I choose to go down the modding route.

The front wings are bubbling up near the headlights, the exhaust is blowing and the alloy wheels are appalling. So here is a list of things I plan to do, and will put all the progress in this thread:

So far I have fitted a Mercedes R170 SLK Silver Chrome AMG Grille and replaced the exhaust with a custom midsport cat-back stainless steel exhaust which sounds awesome!

On the to-do list are:
Front AMG bumper
Rear bumper/splitter
Side skirts
VMAX front wings
VMAX bonnet
Chrome angel eye headlights
Rear spoiler
Refurb/replace alloy wheels
Speer pulley kit
ECU remap
Transmission kit and refill
Suspension upgrade

Like I said, adding it all up I could just buy a newer model, but then there would be no fun to have. I like modding, and I love this car.

Here are some photos of said car:

Transmission fluid kit, Angel eyes and Supercharger fluid kit have all arrived and so I shall get started on those soon. Just waiting for the crank pulley upgrade kit to arrive.

Paint for the wheels is also here, so I will start on them too, just as a temporary look, then I will replace them with new aftermarket alloys

Hw do you refurb the alloy wheels, It seems it's pretty expensive when you give thme to a specialized firm. Mine are in a bad state too from the 1999.
It's a shame that those expensive original MB's peel off in such a way.Although I always cared them well.

I have my own workshop at the bottom of the garden, and in it I have a sand blast cabinet and an air compressor, so I blast the sand off the surface of the alloy to remove all the flaky paint etc, filler any of the deep scratches, then using my paintgun I undercoat, silver coat and lacquer and finish with a good polish. Works very well when using the proper equipment, failing that I would just go out and buy some new ones.

Looking forward to your pictures, any ideas what aftermarket alloys you're planning on going for?

No, haven't really looked yet, although I do like the multi-spoke alloys on the R171's.

Do you have any suggestions?

Yeah, I like the multi spokes. I have the stepped AMG IV's on mine. They do look good. Definitely make the car look more 'sporty'

Yeah, here you go. They can be quite hard to get hold of. There are copies out there though.

Right, just a quick update with piccys. The crank pulley kit arrived yesterday, and so as the weather was a bit better today I decided to go ahead and fit it and also change the supercharger fluid.

Here is the crank pulley kit before going in:

And here is the old pulley and belt in place:

So then I removed the water expansion tank and radiator fan, which was a bit fiddly but I got there in the end:

And now I have fitted the new pulley over the old crank, it fits like a glove and as you can see there are screws on the inside which are tightened with a number 4 allen key. As per PaulWirrel's advice, I tightened the screws on opposite sides as I went along to try to ensure that the crank pulley is central.

Finally after a bit of a fight and with some help from the dear wife, I managed to get the new pulley belt on and all done!

Final job was the supercharger fluid, very easy. After removing the airbox etc, I located the small hex screw and removed it to let the supercharger oil out:

Using the syringe provided, I removed the old oil, then replaced with the new oil until it overflowed out the screw hole. Reversed the process to put it all back together, clean up the engine bay and done!

Started the car up and all sounds and looks fine. Angel eyes going in tomorrow, so looking forward to that job.

Oh, and anyone who says the old supercharger oil smells like an apes backside is lying...it smells like 100 apes backsides!!!!

Hope this post helps others who are thinking of doing the same modifications. Just going out now to see the results of all the hard work done today, wish me luck.
