Headlights and Tail lights

The headlights on my little 2001 SLK 230 car looks crappy (best term I could think of). They are xenon. Can you change the lens or do you have to change the whole headlight? If I do have to replace the head light, is there an economical place to buy them?

Later today, I'm going to try to hard wire the tail light. It has always been a problem for me. It was originally fixed with a recall, but that didn't last long. Been a thorn in my side to have to get out and twist the bulb which may or may not make it work.

Each time I search, it states its not compatible with Xenon headlights. Spyders are not compatible. So frustrating.

I had one new lens and one lens that was yellowing a bit. Not bad but when compared to the new one it looked terrible.
I bought the cheap lens restorer and worked on it for 2 hours, it looked better but not good enough. I then bought the kit with the drill mounted buffing pad. It looks as good as the new one.

Can you just change the lens without changing the guts? If so, where did you get the lens?

I have seen the headlight restoration kits do a great job. Particularly the ones rt1092 mentions. I have used "Wipe New" with surprisingly good results. It come with a small wet-sanding pad and the wiping liquids. They looked much better, but the yellowing came back in about 6 months.

I'm pretty sure you can get just the lenses by themselves for the r170 , as you can see here , although the Xenon lenses may have a different reference number :

MERCEDES BENZ SLK R170 Lichtscheibe Scheinwerfer links A 1708260190 *U | eBay

Maybe Jeff or someone with WIS can get you your exact part numbers with your VIN number ?

Check with your local Mercedes for prices , you may be suprised ?

For the tail lights you could look into some led ones , there are a few around ..

I did new lights front and back. I had standard halogens so the Spyders were an easy fix. No xenon love from me. The tails are very easy to do, and are a big improvement.

I think I'm sober now

I have the Spyder and they look and work great. If you have the xenons the Spyders should just plug in...no adapters needed. You have to figure out if you want the black or chrome.

it seems that to select a headlight replacement you need to know whether you have a halogen car or a xenon one... any idea how I find out what I've got? mine's a 1998 plain old model

Send Jeff a Private Message with your VIN number and he'll post the datacard that lists all the options on your car, in the Datacard subforum.

If you have Xenon, there is no aftermarket option. I did alot of research and e-mailing vendors. Mosts ad's state "not compatible with factory Xenon". I contacted via email several vendors whos ad did not state "not compatible with factory Xenon" and found all those could not give a YES or NO answer to compatability. Long and short is, I don't believe there is a plug and play non-OEM option for the factory Xenon set-up.

I took a chance and bought a set from a vendor that did not state any compatibility issues. They did not work. I could not make them work. A local auto detailing and auto lighting specialist estimated between 2 to 6 hours to maybe install them, but no guarantees. At $85 /hour, just to steep a gamble for me.

This is just my 2 cents. Others may have other experiences.
