Advice on another Benz

Well my dad wants a Benz too and he liked the C300, but it turns out everyone has them and losing credibility quickly. I thought maybe he should get an used CLS500 or an E550. He's a big dude and he wants a comfortable car with 4 doors. budget around 40-50k. Also it has to look pimping.

I'd hit eBay (I know, I say this all the time), use their sort feature to look at MB sedans, with low miles (whatever you decide is good, say less than 30k), and put in your price range and see what pops up. That might help you decide on which model to concentrate your efforts...

Problem is I'm in Puerto Rico, which makes it difficult to bring a car over from the main land. I use clasificadosonline which is horrible. Not many cars there but at least I get a sense of what is going on with the car market. That's how I got the SLK. This is one i'm considering:

He definitely wants a benz, we saw an E550 last night and it looked crazy good.

Both look good. E550 and CLS 500. It may be a question of if the low roofline is acceptable to the rear passenger area in the CLS. I'd have dad test drive both and then decide.

Yeah, agree with the general comments. If you can get your hands on a E55, that is actually one of - IMHO - the best sleeper sedans ever sold.

Great car in and of itself, and when you step on it, simply insane!

I got an CPO E500 4matic for my Dad last year. He likes it but the styling is a bit bland for me and I feel lacking power compared to the E550. The ride is great with Airmatic, it has enough power for the way he drives, but as a big (heavy) person I find the seats a little uncomfortable. I drove it for about two weeks over the winter, up to 6 hour per drive, and found the seats a bit too short and lacking lumbar and shoulder support.

MB cheaped out and have manual lumbar. I think the Dynamic seats are more comfortable, but my understanding is that those were phased out after 2006/07 as an option on the non-AMG version. I think MB tried to simplify the options list and removed some of the choices as the years went by.

If I were you, I would wait until the new body shape hits the dealers later this year. That will drive the price on existing E way down and used prices for the old body style will probably plummet within a year.

I wanted to get a CLS500/CLS550, but found that since they use the same seats, I found it too small. Also the roof was too low and doors too short to easily get in and out. I like the styling overall, but I already had a small car and wanted something more comfortable.

I test drove C300/C350/C63 several times and find the interior to have too much black plastic on the dash. It didn't feel "exclusive" enough to me since anyone on a $399 / month lease can get the C300 around where I live. I think the C63 is still pretty new and will depreciate way too much in the next year / 2 years for me to be interested right now. It also suffers from the same cheap looking dash and most people can't tell it apart from the $399 version.

Now we're somewhat looking for a good condition used S550 with AMG sport package or something more exotic.

+1 or E63, my dealer had a 2007 E63 with ~21K miles, still under warranty, it sold in a week, the listed price was $51,500 but I'm sure the price was negotiable.

Actually, the C300 is an excellent, excellent car.

Thats why it is Germany's "ADAC'S" car of the year.
