'06 vs '07 nav

Hey everyone! Not sure if any of you remember me, I joined a few months back...long story short, I switched jobs, life got hectic and at long last, the dust has settled. Feels great to be back here...I missed chattin with everyone.

That being said....I've been keeping an eye out on the SLK's, still not ready to make a purchase, but enjoying every second of the hunt. Long story short, I don't want to dish out the cash for an '08 or an '09 so I've been looking heavily at the '06's and '07's. The dealer gave me a pamphlet on the '07's and there was one small blip in it that caught my eye. First, is the '07 command system more updated than the '06? I dont know too much about navs to begin with, but I was just curious. Next, how is the reputation with the '07's with their ipod capability? Like I mentioned, that small blip caught my eye but I wanted some first hand opinions.

Thanks for taking the time to read this guys and once again, glad to be back!

The iPod was an option for 2007. It connects into COMAND and requires the use of steering wheel buttons for actual iPod control. Cable runs through the center console into the center armrest - which locks the gear inside when you lock the car. iPod charges when the car is on. iPod will not work without the key in the ignition - COMAND will still play CDs and radio without the key - so if you are at a gas station and leave the key in with the car off, your tunes will pause on the iPod and resume when you start the car.

Nav changes were made - distance and time to destination were added during Navigation mode. Subtle, less bitchy female voice/tone as well.

Sirius was standard on 2007. I think it was optional on 2006. But satellite radio control requires some getting used to - it makes sense in the long-run, but it's hard to grasp the concept of the satellite switching and channel surfing will all those buttons. I didn't care for Sirius, mainly because of the 4+ lag between channels - which happens with most satellite systems.

A 2006 should accept the new changes in software if you load a freshly minted update nav DVD - only supplied by Mercedes. So the 2007 changes should appear on a 2006 - sans anything requiring hardware.

Hmm - so from a hardware standpoint, other that various revision, the NTG2 systems are identical from introduction in '05 to upgrade to NGT2.5 in MY09. Navi drive is also the same.

All the firmware is upgradable (COMAND and Navi) - minor updates via the NAVI maps disk and major from the dealer. These upgrades are free. Maps costs money, and can be purchased from MB or the map vendor (Teleatlas? - I forget on the US spec cars) - you usually save $50 from the map vendor vs MB's price. ETA and some faster route management were the big changes that occured in mid 2006 - as stated before, dealer firmware upgrade.

On US spec cars, Sirius was never standard, but pre-wiring for Sirus was up until mid MY06. Pre-wiring saves you hassle if you decide you want Sirius, but not having it does not prevent you from retro-fitting it. Mid MY06 cars have the smaller hockey puck antenna on the boot color coded to the car, MY05 cars have the bigger, black wart. (IF fitted at factory - some cars with dealer installed Sirius in MY06 still used the older warts)

"Standard" iPod kit will work on any R171 with COMAND up to MY09. MY09 can still use the "old" kit that shows you song titles in the MFD display, and is controlled via the steering only. MY09 with either A20/2.5 or COMAND NTG2.5 can use the new media interface, which allows control of the iPod via steering and COMAND, with display out to COMAND only.

So if i'm going to dealer, what exaclty am i asking for? "Hey can i have the new NTG 2.5 upgrade CD"? John - you mentioned "these upgrades are free". Which upgrades are you referring to? Everything except the maps update?

By the way, my 06 has "pre-wiring" for IPOD. What do i have to get to make it compatible with COMAND? Do SLK's have auxilary inputs somewhere?

I also have telephone buttons on my steering wheel and if i go thru the options it says i don't have telephone installed. So i guess pre-wiring has been done i just need to get it installed? How can i get the bluetooth on it?

You want to ask for latest COMAND firmware update to be installed on your headunit, you don't actually need the disk at all because the dealer will use the copy they own to install it under warranty (hence John's comments on it being free), the firmware (stuff installed for free) will enable the various new functions on the headunit and will disable access to the engineering menu, the stuff you have to pay for is the mapping data DVD.

I don't know what MBUSA's idea of iPod pre-wiring is so i will leave that to John.

The steering wheel always has the phone buttons present (cheaper than making a new button cluster) regardless of the pre-wire situation, you will probably just have to install the core and completer kits to enable the phone function and to use a cell phone with BT you will need to order the puck.

Dan, please excuse my ignorance, i haven't read the manual yet and intend to over the weekend. When you say - "..will disable access to the engineering menu" - do you mean not being able to see Oil Level, MPG etc on NAV screen (i didn't know you could do that in the first place)? Or does it disable it from your speed-o-meter screen? Well the car is still under warranty so hopefully they'll do it.

The engineering menu contains settings relating to the COMAND, it has been used to disable TV in motion lockouts (on EU cars) and it can perform other functions like erase the firmware, its nothing that the end user really need to worry about to be honest with you.

It won't have any effect on the ability to view detailed data in the service menu (on the instrument cluster display)

In the US, Navteq provides the mapping data on DVD. Here's the link ($249)

Went to MB dealer today. They said they don't upgrade COMAND firmware unless there is something wrong with it. I said my friends have and the service advisor is like "...he probably had something wrong with his COMAND system..".

Any advise? I thought COMAND was under warranty and upgradable. But talking to the dealer it seems its only under warranty when there is something wrong with it. How did you guys update yours?

I have an 07 55 with an updated iPod cable installed. The volume is so low I never even use it which is a shame. The same thing on my ML is just as loud as a CD. When I say "updated" i mean the dealer acknowledged the problem with the cable and installed a new one which was suupposed to fix the problem but never did. My service guy is great out here in Vegas and takes great care of me. Make buddies with your service guy and they will get you what you need.

They don't have to do it under warranty unless something is wrong with it, other option is to pay labor on it.

There's no huge reason to upgrade it unless you are having problems. The NAVI upgrade is only required with '07 and later maps.

Tell him to install the iPod inline AMP, it will help out a lot - not perfect, but a heck of a lot better than without. Last time I ordered one it was $.49 from the dealer.

Well my car went in for extended warranty work on the crank pulley and whilst it was there they said a nav reflash was listed on the system and asked me to sign and agree having it done. I signed and its deffo an improvement. All free Go figure !

Yea, Supplying dealer Brighton said nothing and obviously did nothing when they serviced it but my local dealer Chester volunteered it, looks like they looked after me for once. Deffo worth trying another dealer although paying/linking to a service could be a deal maker ?

Real quick, why is it required with the 07 and not the 06? Is there something different with the software?

This strikes me in my heart. I was looking for an 07 with an ipod integration unit in it...what you guys are saying is it doesnt work well? What's wrong with it? I'll be honest, this was a huge selling point to me about the car.

Hmm, maybe you misunderstood - or I wasn't clear - the 07 Map update added a different data structure for the route database - so the firmware in the navigation unit needed an upgrade.

It works - it's just not ideal with COMAND, as it's not integrated at all. You see song titles and details in the MFD, and can only use the steering controls. MB in their infinite wisdom also limited the input range on the AUX, so the volume on the iPod not so hot - MB retrofitted an inline AMP to help address this.

Alrighty...I appreciate that. What about the 08's? Do they have similar iPod and nav issues? I guess I'm hoping they updated it a bit.
