It's like the guy reached into my brain, pulled out all the fluff and put it into a coherant post.

Thank you Steve.

P.S - Yes i know i have a modified AMG but its modified by Brabus and i think they are qualified, plus as some of you know the whole damn drivetrain was worked on to cope with the extra horses so don't even think about flaming me.

:-) I'm not really considering Brabus as "my uncle joe"! I consider Brabus to be just as capable as AMG was - and know they have some serious engineering talent as well.

Just read it, and it's very well written. I must say, I fall into that category. I have always thought about making some serious changes to a car, when i realize I could buy a better one for the same money. This quote sums it up for me "If you want more performance out of your car, buy the higher performing model." I recently looked at new wheels, but decided I couldn't really improve the AMG wheels I have without serious money. I'm also envious of the folks who have supercharged their cars, but I don't go to the track, and there is no one in my neighborhood who currently challenges me for cul-de-sac supremacy...

BUT, I also admire those folks who want to personalize their own car. There is a lot to be said for making something your own. Their is also great personal satisfaction from building something, including a car.

So I can understand both sides of the modification issue. I greatly admire the owners who successfully improve their cars, but when the time comes to drop another $20 on my 55, it will either be for a new one, or for the next great thing. Maybe a Ferrari (I've always wanted one!)...

I know you level headed guys would understand, but a few names spring to mind who would take the first chance they get to fire a few shots at me so i figured i would get that door closed first.

Excellent read and I accept as fact. I've said before, I'm content with my SLK 55 from the factory. I see no need to add performance parts to my SLK 55. Reminds me of one former SLK 55 owner who took a used $50,000 SLK 55 and added $30,000 worth of high performance to it, kept it about a year and then sold it for around $46,000. No disrespect intended, but that's a lot of money that you'll never recoup. I assume the rush is with the building process.

Absolutely. Throwing a $20 at it doesn't even fill the tank!

I was thinking about waiting for the car to finish the warranty, and then having the whole Kleemann mod done. Supercharger, LSD, exhaust...

But then I thought, $20-25,000 plus my trade would buy a new one. Or an SL AMG. Or a Lambo. OR 4 years of college for my son...

However, if they keep making the changes I've seen proposed to cars of the future, I may keep this one. I sure do like it.

DJ, 100% agree, Kleeman maybe but right now faster than >95% (or more) than anything on the street. As most of you have figured out not selling this car (had the GTO 33 years)

Looking forward to seeing y'all (southern term) this Saturday!!

Thank you all for your kindness.

And yes, i agree: I have a lot of respect for anyone who works on their own car and even more for those who realize that they can't do this job or that themselves and hire a pro. Good mechanics have to eat, too, and if we don't keep them busy they won't be in business when ya really need one.

I even understand the guys in the buzzing little ricegrinders who fix up what they have...ya run what ya brung. I was there, and really still am...I'm just a bit older and have a few more pennies in my pocket now. And I only came to my opinion after leaving a lot of hot parts scattered down the track. We live, we learn.

Don't worry, I believe in "Flame other as you would have them flame you " ; )

Steve

Kleeman, Brabus, RennTech, these people are experts mate and are every bit as qualified as the factory, a lot of them come right outta the factory so i wasn't trying to say stay away from them, they are the people i would happily recommend to work on your car.

What came to my mind when i read Steve's blog was the 'gimme $500 and i know a guy who can knock you up a XYZ that will make your car so damn fast it will take the ass end a half-hour to catch up with the front at the stop light' or the 'my car doesn't quite spark enough as i drive down the road, should i remove the springs?' crowd's.

Perhaps it's the used-car prices at the minute but we seem to be picking up more and more of those folks who before where insulated from us by a few layers of dollars and the only people who could afford SLK's where the ones who really worked hard for them and where typically more mature and reasonable as a result.

I'm not against tasteful modding at all and have been very impressed at some of the mod projects i have seen on this site so far but most of them have either involved OEM parts (COMAND's and stuff) or proper tuner stuff that we know is good and solid, it's just very lately I'm seeing more and more sticky tape and chewing gum type mods appearing and figured i would throw this well-worded blog entry out for all who might be thinking of taking the short-cut way out to read.

Great Article! Kleeman, Kleeman, Kleeman! How sweet the sound!

Dave, DJ, Shelton and myself have had this Kleeman conversation and we all seem to end up at the same place. With the 355hp we have, we're not even using all of that! What the heck are we gonna do with 500+hp? Bragging rights maybe? Who has deep pockets?

I think if I do decide to go the Kleeman route, it'll be when the car is out of warranty and owes me nothing or as DJ said.....Its F430 time!!!
