wind

hi ! i am in the process moving into a convertable here at the beach in california. I have been blogging Z4, SLK and SC430 forums for driving experience of those that own the cars. Someone on the Z forum just said you may not like the way the wind comes around the windshield on the SLK and hits you on the side of the head. Anything on wind ?

Not sure what he's on about - I've not really noticed wind coming "around" the windscreen?

Personally, I'd pop down to the local MB dealer and take one for a spin.

Never noticed any wind at all with oem windscreen. maybe they were referring to the mesh screen.

As UK-C200 said, take all 3 out for test drives including the freeway. Best way to determine issues.

I ride the freeways with the top down, windows down with no problems.

Only if you are ready to buy, because as soon as you drive a SLK, you will have to have it now.

That's what happened to us. We went along just to look at the CLC and ended up with the SLK. As soon as we sat behind the wheel, we had to test drive it and we were hooked.

We'd been kicking around the idea of an SLK for some time, so wasn't a total shock that we ended up with one, but it was surprisingly easy to fall for it (and I've driven many many cars over the last 20+ years as part of my job). It was just useless to resist....

all convertibles will have some wind buffeting from the side at high speeds.

Spent a lot of time in the Z4 (2.5) while owning my SLK, wind is about the same, the Z4 rides a lot harder, and feels a lot sportier, but the acual performance is no better than the SLK. It's a better deal in terms of money though, if that's a concern for you.

The SC430 is too comfy, you'll fall asleep behind the wheel. Drives like a minivan...steers like a boat.

:-) We still have our C Sport Coupe, and it's getting to the point were I was thinking about a CLC - for me, it's hard to justify an SLK as an "only" car here in London. Bad news is that the wife has said "get what you want", even worse is the absolutely beautiful SL-350 they let me drive.

Well its the first time I heard that about the wind in a SLK.

Back in the day I only have BMW, I tried the Z3 (1st and 2sd versions), then the Z4, but preferred the SLK because its a better ride to use daily basis.

Did you conside the BMW 335? Nicer back seat, and more exciting car to boot...

Back to the wind, I've had a half dozen drop-tops, and the wind is no worse than any of them and better than most in the SLK.

testdrive with 4 in the car. The backseat is unusable.

For that matter, have you test driven? that's got to be one of the worst handling 'sports car' i've driven.

I think he was referring to the windshield, rather than the windscreen. The windflow inside the cabin when using a windscreen product can be adjusted by raising and lowering your windows. The windscreen products are designed to block back draft only. (the wind that goes over windshield, not around, and comes back to hit you in the back of the head)

Like our mates said the back seat of the Lexus is unusable. The only convertibles I konw with real four seats are the BMW 3 series, MB CLK and the Audi A5. Beside that the SC430 is less technological advanced as its german competitors.

tall driver

Hello from San Francisco Bay Area!
I'm thinking about buying SLK in the next few weeks. Doing my homework now... First of all, I'm interested how strong the wind is when you're driving on a highway at 65 MPH (105 km/hour) with top down and windows up ? Is it something doable or you have to have your top up?
The important thing is I'm 186 cm tall (6' 1-2'').
I will test-drive it soon, of course. But would like to know in advance.

I tried driving Nissan 350Z with top down, windows up. I absolutely enjoyed th driving, but there was too much wind for me even at 50 MPH, although my friend (who is 165 cm tall) didn't feel anything. The wind hit the top of my head.

so, how comfortable is SLK (with top down) for a tall driver?

Welcome from Atlanta. I would test drive one, but I'm sure you will also get feedback here.

Well it's been nice and sunny today and I've been driving on the motorway (freeway) with the top down and about 17 deg C outside. Even with just a T-shirt on, it was quite comfortable, wind level was fine for me (5' 11") and my passenger (6' 2")..

Test drive one..
