Fuel Gas Gauge Problem - Erratic Indicator Needle

I brought my 99 SLK230 in for repairs after a rear-end collision. When I picked my car up from the repair facility, I found that the gas/fuel gauge was not working.

Basically, the gas/fuel indicator needle moves around erratically, even pointing to areas not w/in the typical Full to Empty range printed on the gauge cluster. I never had any problems with the gas/fuel gauge before this.

Does anyone know what the problem is and what caused it?

Since they did repairs to the rear. The repair shop may have removed the fuel tank. My guess is something (like the float or sensor assembly) got knocked loose inside the fuel tank and is giving out the errors.

Thanks for the input

I do not believe it was necessary for the repair shop to remove the fuel tank due to the nature of the repairs (I should have mentioned them):
Re-painting the trunk & rear bumper, replacing the brake switch, and readjusting the misaligned trunk lid.

I never had any prior problems with the gauge cluster and the only portion that is not working properly is the erratic fuel needle indicator.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You never know, they may have played with the sensor in the rear of the trunk.
