Help, Need to buy my wife a new car

Hi All,

Bad news yesterday. My wife's 2004 Volvo XC90 blew the tranny yesterday. Car's been paid for the last 5 years. Blue Book is $10-12K, repair is ~$7K. Remember I live in Germany.
Anyway, my wife is getting a new car, even though she has her eyes on my SLK 55. She states she looks good in my car and I tell her she would look in any car... So I'm trying to keep my SLK and buy her a new car. We're looking at the MB GLK, VW Tourag, Volvo XC 60 and a few Audi's...
I need to get another car ASAP, but I'm looking for any advice from y'all... I'm pushing for another practical car like an SUV, though she wants something smaller like the Volvo XC-60. I'm just not sure if I should stay with MB and the GLK or C-series or another manufacturer.
I know I'll be spending the next few days researching and dealing with "dealers". Sometimes cars suck...
Please give me your thoughts.
Thanks!

Oh but the way. Dealers don't haggle much in Europe...

Look at the BMW X3. Fits your description, and they make bunches of them (so good deals). My wife drives one, and I really like it as well. Don't get the nav option though. It's the worst one I've ever used...

what's wrong with the xc 60? why not just get her the car she wants?

if you want practical, how about the C class estate?

The GLK looks great or perhaps the Audi Q5? Both are smaller SUV and will serve the purpose. The GLK is more boxy and the Q5 is more round in shape, X3 is somewhat in between. They are all pretty practical, but if t is me, GLK will be my choice out of the 3, looks really nice in person!!

I guess it is best to let her do some test drive and decide which one she likes

I have driven both the GLK and C-sedan and both are very nice and drive well. Audis are always good cars. Just my $.02.

Don't care for the Tourag, it wallows.. I do like the XC-60, had one as a rental in Sweden, was very nice and comfortable car.

If your looking at the VW Tourag, give the Porsche Cayenne SUV a look. My wife loves her's. It's a turbo though

This sounds precarious.

Anyhow, I'd have her/both of you test drive the top 3 choices, write down the pros and cons of each and then decide.

Thanks all. I just checked out the BMW X-3, not a bad vehicle. Tomorrow will be the big day, Gina and I are going to Volvo, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo and Audi. We'll test them all. I was suprised about the GLK comment, but will definatley keep that in mind. Not sure if Gina will go for another SUV, maybe an estate. She's interested in sedans again, but I know how she shops (needs room). I'm hoping Volvo (with the trouble I had) and both Volvo and Merc will give me some consideration as a second time buyer. Europe is a bit different than the states in that they don't haggle on pricing, which can be good and bad. Bottom-line: It will be the Gina's decision and as I told her, she'll look good in anything....

Thanks again to all!!!

How about the new RS6 Avant or just the not the sporty version with the tastefully done S line kit.

Sure....well, she'll make her desire known . My wife said 'you get an SLK and I'll get a CLK Cabrio so we have a touring car and a sportscar'. I bought my SLK last Thursday morning, she declared she had to have one as well and bought her SLK that night.....so much for plans.

Too bad American Motors isn't still making the Gremlin.

Actually Kelly and I are interested in a GLK, but the Cayenne is a good idea that we hadn't considered. I'd struggle tho if my wife had a Porshe and I didn't...

I don't know if it is available in Germany, but I really like the Chevy Trailblazer SS.

I have owned a dozen Volvos and worked on hundreds, and please let me say this about that: They went straight down the proverbial tubes when Ford bought them (They share major parts with Mazda!!!!) and after fifty years of Volvos in my family, we can no longer buy a new one.

For your wife...you didn't mention...is this a grocery-getter you need? If so, I was just crusin down the freeway this morning, minding my own, with the top down on my SLK 230 Sport and a C Class AMG came up behind me and pointed out that he will play, but usually win. I'd get one for my wife.

I'm supposed to hear something from Volvo concerning my dead XC-90 and any goodwill gesture they may provide. Yesterday evening MB called and are offering 17% discount on their offer. I'm hoping this saga will be resolved by Monday evening...
