Loose part I found floating. around in trunk

I found a piece of black plastic just floating around the trunk, with the part code on it marked A171 684 0618. Its just a flat rectangular piece of plastic about 4 cms x 3 cms, and with two prongs sticking out of it.

anyone have the necessary tools to look up this part number and figure out what its for?

If it's the loose part that I also found floating around when I bought my SLK350 it's to remove the aerial, I think. I won't tell you how long it took me to figure it out!

Post a picture if you can.

That would be a good thread... "Guess what this part is and where it goes."

A1716840618 is listed as "Cover : Hand Brake Lever". See attached, gotta admit I can't visualize where this part actually goes....

Based on UK-C200 and DansSLK's response, my guess is it's the part as indicated by the yellow arrow.

Aha, thank you very much, kind sirs! no wonder that part looked familiar, I remember seeing it when I was taking the car apart while installing a new headunit. How it got around to floating around in the back of the trunk is another question altogether...

Sadly I found mine floating around under the passenger seat today. I'll post some pictures.

Anyway , should I worry in any way or should check for a replacement ?

It appears to be intact (are either of the ears/prongs broken?) so just reinstall.

One "ear" looks broken , maybe that's why it went loose . I hardly know why since almost never use the handbrake since I always put my car in Park mode. Anyway is there a guide to reinstall it back ?

Evening

It can be replaced when the gear lever surround has been removed .. (it just clicks 'home')

The lower cubby needs to come out first (I think - it's been a month or two since I took mine out) - lift off the gear lever gaiter, lift up the silver gear surround (you can then disconnect the wiring under the gear display) and then prise up the whole gear surround assembly (I usually lift if using the newly created 'hole' where the gear lever gaiter was)

You'll be able to refit the plastic piece - it goes backwards and up till it clicks into place around the base of the handbrake...(You may need another pair of ahnds to hold the bit it clicks into to stop it moving around)

There was another thread on here a while back about this..

Cheers
Sean
