HID Conversion-Main Beam

Has anyone converted the Main Beam element of the R171 headlamps to HID?

I did this on my Jeep Grand Cherokee and literally turned night into day, the only drawback was that if main beam hasn't been used for a while then there is a short "warming up period" while the HID bulb attains full brightness.

Which prompts another question-anyone know of a conversion kit that has little or no discernable "warm up time" ie instant full brightness?

Also under consideration is changing the dipped beam HID bulbs to a higher temperature, 6000k, the standard HIDs (4300 k?) are much the same temperature (colour) of a standard halogen bulb.

While I'm in there I may as well change the park light bulb for a whiter bulb to match the headlamps, recommendations please for filament or LEDs that anyone's used with success.

I've searched for, without success, the specifications for the bulbs. I know the park light bulbs are W5W, and I think the dip are 9007 Straight Entry, but are the Main Beam H7?

Plenty of others have upgraded their low beam halogen H7 lights with aftermarket HID kits. Do a search here and the other MB forums for details and "how to". Here's one link, this forum, to get your started.

The factory HIDs are rated at 4300k, and look much better than the yellow factory halogens. I upgraded my factory HID bulbs to 5000k. 6000k might be best, but I'd avoid anything higher (8000-12000k). I changed my factory H7 high beams to Sylvania SilverStar Extreme bulbs, changed the factory H7 halogens fogs to aftermarket 6000k halogen bulbs, and switched the factory yellowish parking lights to extreme white lights. I hope this info helps.

Update on the upgrading of the Xenon bulbs that I carried out some time ago.

I replaced the standard 4300k lamps with 6000k on the basis that this mod carried out on my Jeep produced excelent results.

Having only recently been driving regularly at night I can now admit that it has not been an entirely successfull change. It seems that it is a step too far and 5000k may have been better, the 6000k bulbs on this system seem to be just a tad too much up the spectrum and the light on the road is not as good as standard.

Will be going back to standard to see how that looks.

Anybody want some slightly used 6000k Xenon Bulbs? One carefull lady owner, never raced or rallied.

You've discoverd the reason all manufacturers retain halogen bulbs for "flashers," i.e. the warmup time is incompatible with the function.

Think you missed the point of my posts there Ikchris, the warm up time of the Xenons is only a minor issue the first time you go to main beam, my point is that a 6000k bulb doesn't seem to suit the optics of the SLK, whereas the same temperature bulb gives a superb light on my Jeep.

The upshot pof this is that I feel I should have tried 5000k in the SLK.

I've used them a few times for kits/bulbs and they're very helpfull.

Upgrade bulbs for "Xenon look" conventional bulbs:

I have these in my Auxilliary Mains on the SLK and they change the yellow look (compared to the HID lamps) to a bright white and matches the HID colour.

I'm sure that if you search the internet for US suppliers you will find similar kits/bulbs available over there.

You can use the sylvania H7 lamps (they have 2 kinds, one at 4000K and another at 4200K, warranted for 1 year) for your fog lights. You can do the Fog light yourself (IIRC you have the AMG sports package). Here's a link. It contains pmartel's pdf on changing the lamp, etc on the fog light.

If auxiliary main refers to the high beam lamp, then they're H7 lamps/bulbs also.

I kinda like the Silverstar Ultra because their color temp is closer to 4200K. 4000K colour temp is a tad yellowish still and easily differentiated when lit next to the BiXenon OEM lamps. The problem is that these aftermarket H7 lamps may not last even 1 year, although it seems to be lasting longer than 1 year in my daughter's 2000 BMW 323i. It's a hit-or-miss type thing on the longevity of the aftermarket lamps. OEM IIRC is 55W.

I still have OEM H7 halogen lamps on mine as they are rarely used (both the fog lamps and the high beam auxiliaries).

You should be able to do both - fog lamps ('tho more steps are involved, but do-able) and the high-beam auxiliaries. Please give us your feedback/opinion on how you like/dislike these.

IIRC it's cheaper than in the stores (usually around $40-45 before sales tax). Just want you to be aware that the cheaper price is after rebate.

Purchase by 02/03/2010 but need to mail by 03/13/2010.
