Looking into a radar detector but unsure of instillation?

I would like to get a radar detector and have read that the Valentine 1 is the way to go.

Originally, I thought a radar detector was just something you clipped to your visor or something, but upon further research I've been reading about all sorts of more permanent instillations.

Once I purchase the unit is instillation something just about anyone can do or is it more complicated than that? I don't have a lot of DIY experience....

Thanks!

Installation can be as difficult or easy as you like. In my Lexus, I had a permanent K40 installation with the indicator lights drilled into the guage wells of the speedo. I also had the volume and city/highway knob hidden under the dash. No visible elements except to the driver. I recently had a quote to do radar detection and laser jamming in a fully hidden configuration for about $2,000. Didn't pull the trigger yet, but I might.

I just install an Escort 9500ci in my car, and I'll be posting a DIY here next week when I've got some down time. On a scale of 1 to 10, it's about a 8.5 IF you are familiar with the SLK's electronics.

I personally am very happy with the results, and so far, it's range has proven much better than my 8500 x50.

As mentioned above, stealth install detectors are a lot more expensive than traditional clip on's. V1 vs Escort is like Windows vs Mac, so prepare yourself! ;-)

Thanks for the replies.

So, do the clip on ones work?

I am not familiar with the SLKs electronics at all, so I would basically be starting from scratch, knowing little to nothing.

But, I've gotten two warnings in the past week... so I don't want to push my luck with any more run ins .

Not up to speed on radar detectors, so I had a look for grins. Why is that forum so opposed to K40 products? Seems a bit over the top...

The best radar detector is by far the Valentine One, its by far the most out standing detector out there and you can only order it by Valentine.com and no other retailer has the right to sell it.

Passport is right behind it!

But on most SLK's a radar detector is hard to install, for once, a proper radar should only be located under your rear mirrior,at least at that location...and most slk's do not even have the spot/space for it,like other cars...

I used to have a V1, and had it istalled above my rear mirror.

The lower the radar detector placed in the car,the worst it reacts...it should always be placed as high to the rear mirror as possible!

But in todays age 2009...most cops in most states and cities use laser, and the only thing a radar detectors can tell you is,even the valentine, you just got caught by it haha...because a laser gun can be turned off and on...and often the cops have it turned off and turn it on for 2 sec to get your speed, by that time your radar tells you the alarm, but also the cop has your speed...

Any "speeders" and laser / radar fanatics will tell you

Radar and Laser Jammer is the only way to go, but they cost around $1000, at least the good ones!
