Body Design Question

Gotta be honest guys, I'm still a little torn between what year to get. I've been to a few dealerships right now, and while I've decided there are worse things in the world than an '09 SLK, I'm still a little hesitant. For the R171's...I guess what I'm looking at, '06-present...has there been any modifications to the overall outside appearance to the car. Difference in the taillights? More of an etch design on the side? Grills different in any small way? I really wanna know the intricate details.

I ask this because like I mentioned above, all I've really had a chance to see up close and personal is the '09's. What I'm curious about, is the '06's, '07's, and '08's. Mind you, this is strictly outside appearance now, nothing else. Also, feel free to throw in your oppinions if in fact there are some slight differences...I'd love to hear what you guys prefer! Thank you!

MY05-MY07 are all externally identical as far as looks go, with various minor tweaks here and there.

MY08-MY98 are the "facelifted" cars, so new front and rear bumper designs, and a new "lower profile" antenna as standard. Note also that the "nose" ends higher up "above" the bumper line that it did on the pre-facelifted cars.

Again, this depends on what you are looking for - but in the '350's, you get a new, more powerful and fuel efficient engine in the MY08+ cars.

If you are looking for the pre-facelifted model from 05 to 08, I highly suggest to look for those one with AMG package. The look much better IMO. I had my 05 350 without the AMG package as it cost $8500 at the time for such option, but now the difference is very minimum. Take you time and search the net, you should be able to find pictures for both

I know we've been pestering you about updating your profile, so if you still can't fix it let one of the admins know and they can go in and alter it for you.

The reason I bring it up, is pricing and availability really depends on where you live. If I remember correctly, you live in Florida. I'd suggest you hit eBay and Autotrader. Run a search for local SLKs. I bet you'll find 10-12 available, in year-models from '05-'08, within an hour of your home. Spend a day visiting them and driving a few (it's a REALLY nice way to kill a Saturday). You can also see most of the cosmetic differences by studying the eBay ads on-line. I have a 2001 320, but I've been shopping for a newer 55 for about a year. I'm probably within a month of FINALLY making a purchase, but it took that long. Prices kept dropping, and it took me awhile to sort out all the subtle differences (the same ones you mention). After looking for that long, I figured out what I really wanted (55, airscarf) and what wasn't important to me (color, radio). I hope that helps, but rating things like design details and appearance will be almost completely subjective. Only the individual can decide whether they like hood fins or not...

Real quick, I tried the profile info thing again, I got "Server failed to respond in time." If you'd like, I'd gladly list the info and put it in the new member section...perhaps an admin can get it in there for me? In a few weeks however, I'll be donating to the website, I read the thread about the transition and even as a new member, the friends and information here is priceless. Just let me know what would work best and I'll be happy to do it.

Good news though. I got back from another dealership today and the picture is coming clear. I'll be taking your advice dmjonez and will be killing my Saturday tomorrow just test driving each of the cars and getting a final feel. The more I learn about this car, the more I fall in love. Decision is so hard though...280/300 has great mpg with the rest of the sexiness of an SLK, the 350 is to me a balance of both worlds in terms of mpg and power, and the AMG is just an orgasm on wheels. Can't wait to drive em...I'm still a SLK virgin by the way, haven't officially driven it yet. Very excited!

Some of the options though in this car are just amazing. The fact that they can track your car by satalite and call you if you get into an accident is just mind-blowing. Plus, he mentioned oil changes only once a year (or after so many miles, I forget the exact number). I'm in heaven.

One thing I did notice, if I get used, some of the models dont come with the navigation unit. By chance, are certain years more likely to have a nav than others, say the 07/08's because they're fairly newer (year wise)? I'd love a low mileage 06 with a nav for a great price. But then again, the 09's are sexy as well. Time will tell. Thanks for the help thus far and for anyone that can clarify my nav question. I'll post tomorrow after the test runs.

Good luck with the search. As for the profile, send a PM to one of the administrators (try Sulley007) and see if he can set you up. Don't post it here, as you never know what happens to stuff in the public view...
I made this posting public so others might see it as well.

I had the same problem trying to add my location yesterday and today, but this afternoon it quit giving me the "Server failed to respond in time" and all is well. I wonder if it is just a matter of server traffic?

I heard from Bill that there was a minor problem with one server, so it's worth another try...

Stay away from 05. Some of them have oil consumpt problems.
AMG package is a plus. You will be pleased with nav and ariscraf.
If you are planning to keep the SLK for a long time, I will go for a 55. The next generation SLK should be out in late 2010 and it might not have the F1 nose (according to several sources). The 55 will be more than a collecter's car in the future if that happened.
350 is not a slow car and you will be happy about it's abilities.
Another thing, 06s are out of warantty soon. All the newer BM are pretty expensive to fix. It took the dealer about 4 hrs to figure out why the ESP light went off on mine. It's was still under the warantee, so it was free. You can figure it out if not ($120 per hr)

Good luck with the car shopping. People say the car shopping is half the fun of owning it.
