Noise in cold weather driving

It is really cold in Indiana.
Yesterday, it was -3 F!!! So I made sure to warm up my slk320 before I drove off.
I immediately started hearing some rough scraping sound from the front of the car, that I thought first the front tires were rubbing against snow. I did check, and there was no snow accumulated around. I only heard the sound during coasting or breaking, but never when my foot was on the gas.
Does anyone have an idea???
Thanks.

The fluid in shocks can freeze up in extreme cold condition, resulting in noisey operation.

I know that with any of my cars when it gets real cold (it's -13 F this morning) the suspension parts make a lot of noise until they get worked in. For you, and I'm no expert, it sounds like some water may have gotten somewhere around the wheel area and frozen.

When I was much younger I knew any strange noise I heard when it was cold outside was coming from the car. Now that I'm older I need to make sure the squeaks, groans, grating noises, etc... are not coming from me first.
