Would I be disapointed with a 280?

Hi, as some of you may know I have been looking for a 350 for some time now. I'm trying to buy from my local auction and I'm finding that the 280s come up a lot more often than the 350s.

Up until now I've only really been looking at the 350s but is there really a lot of difference between them and the 280s?

Obviously the 280s would be slightly cheaper to run and slightly cheaper to insure but will I just be dissapointed if I get a 280 instead of a 350?

A SLK 280 would be suitable for most. Chances are, you can find a SLK 350 for slightly more than the 280. Used SLK 55s are selling for unbelivable low prices. Take your time in choosing.

Also, there is one going through at my local auction tomorrow and it says it is Blue, am I right in thinking that if it says Blue on the V5 then it can only be one of the Darker blue colours like Benitoite or Jasper rather than the lighter blues that I think are classed as Silver?

Personally I think I would become dissapointed with the 280 if I originally wanted a 350.

However a 2.8l in a small car is still a powerfull car,

I have an older 320 and I love it. But I've decided to buy a 55 and have been looking for several months. Buying a used car is like fishing, you can't rush it. As for the 280/350/55 comparison, only you can really answer that. If you're looking for a great convertible, all three would do nicely. But each has slightly different characteristics. Some folks in England especially like the 280 due to the taxes. Others like it better as it has a less "aggressive" suspension and is reported to have a more comfortable ride for long trips. The same ride characteristics might be a disadvantage if you plan on racing or more spirited driving...

There are several threads in here discussing this very question. Search for different key words, and I bet you'll find one or more.

I'd advise you to drive both, and if the smile on your face is the same afterwords, then you'd be happy with either one. If you value your bank account, you might even like the 280 better. But if you're after performance, maybe you should wait for a 55.

Hope that was helpful, but probably not!

As for me, my 320 is 8 years old with 58000 miles, so I thought I'd look at new ones. After I drove a 55, I decided to get one. Now I'm waiting out the sellers. If I had bought a month ago, it would have cost me $5000 more. Every week two local sellers call me and drop their price slightly. When one sells, I'll most likely buy the other...

You'll like the 280 but if you don't get the 350, you'll be saying, "If only......". When i got my 05 350, I said I should have gotten the 55. Now I have the 55 and glad I did!

I used to have the 280 it was my parents sports car back then, I drove it and it lacks torque I'd get the 350 if I had the chance of advising them before getting the 280 which was a surprise.

First, the 280 has a 3.0L engine, not a 2.8. I don't know why MB designated it as a 280, but they corrected this mistake starting with the '09 MY. The 280 lacks the torque (and let's face it, the hp) of the 350. But the 280 (depending on equipment) may have a more comfortable ride than a 350, and a lighter feel. Some feel that the 280 (now 300) has a more of a free revving engine. So it depends on what you want from the car. Best thing is to test drive both, back-to-back and decide for yourself.

Agree, same experience here. As matter of fact, the cost for a 350 could be equal or less than a 280 depends on the options, mileage and yearr...etc At least that's what I see here. There are just so many out there for you to choice, take your time!

If 280 or 350 are your only choice, I would go with the 350, simply because it has a firmer rider (17" wheels) and more sporty engine which is what I was looking for. If they have a SLK63, I will probably do an upgrade too

Like other suggested, try both and see which one fits your desire and go for it. I am sure you will enjoy either one, just like all of us here

Good Luck

Well you have to really think long and hard about what you expect out of the car. If it's just for cruising and looking good the SLK 280 will more than do most people don't realize the difference or even know that there are different trims. If you want to get into racing with the car, you need the biggest engine available to start off with. I have the SLK 280 and no one has ever said to me "oh that's the cheap version" or anything along those lines, because it doesn´t show.

All signs of research that I've done thus far have been leading me towards the 280. The higher pricetag is an issue, however, that isn't what really changed my mind. My deal-breaker was the mpg difference and boost in insurance price (for the '350). Like everyone has advised, keep researching, get a feel for what you really like (for me, hp is a non-issue, I could care less how fast I go, but more about how much cash is in my pocket at the end of the day). Good luck on the decision!

snowbyhui prefers the 350, partly because he correctly determined the ride is firmer. I chose the 280, in part because the ride was softer. Moral: every prospective SLK owner should definitely test drive the various engine and option combinations to determine what he/she prefers. New or used, there is just too much money involved to fail to do so. And, do some research too. For instance, the 16" V rated tires that are part of the softer ride also last longer and are cheaper to replace than the 17" or 18" W rated tires usual to the 350.

Wow, good point Dole. I never even thought about that with the tires.

do note on 2009s and maybe 2008s, the 280/300 has the same time tires as the 350.

I love my 280. Now, what does that tell you without knowing about my expectations and background? Similarly, nobody will be able to answer your question without knowing anything about yours.

Personally, I would not buy a 350Z because if I were to buy another 2-seater, it would be a convertible, and if I buy another convertible, it better have an airscarf.

Actually, the '08s still had the 16" wheels and V rated tires as standard. I don't know about the '09s. I think there are suspension stiffness differences between the 280 (300) and the 350 which are part of the softer ride on the 280 (300) and the stiffer ride on the 350.
