New SLK Owner--Retractable Roof Question

Hi all. I just bought a 2009 SLK 350. On the day I went to pick up the car, it was around 20 degrees and the salesperson said that he could not show me the operation of the roof because the car will not retract the roof when the temperature is too low (in order to prevent the mechanism from being frozen with the top down). Today, I wanted to try it out even though it is still chilly (about 43 degrees). When I push the switch, the windows come down, the trunk opens but the roof does not move. Is this because its too cold? If so, at what temp will the roof come down? Or, did the salesperson just lie and my roof doesn't work properly? Any suggestions for what may be causing this?

Many thanks

Hi mate and welcome

I live in Scotland and I can advise you it's a hell of a lot colder here right now, but my roof operates at any temp I have ever tried it at.

So in answer to your question - I think the salesman may be spinning you a yarn but I am sure someone with a litte more knowledge will be along shortly to confirm if this is the case.

I hope you enjoy your new car.

So I can confirm TKM's findings - my first play with an SLK was at a bit below 0F, and the top when down with no problems at all. Fortunately, it also went back up!

It's 34 degrees Fahrenheit here and my roof works without a problem - however this did happen to me before after the dealer worked on my quarter glass. It had to do with the roof and window synchronization, something I found how to correct in the manual. The windows are supposed to drop a half-inch or so every time you open the door or right after you press the retractable roof button. My passenger side window would not drop and the roof would not retract as a result.

Did you make sure the protector panel in the trunk was pulled fully out? If this panel is not pulled out, the top will not lower.

I know of nothing temperature-sensitive about our roof operation. If, after checking the protection panel, the roof still won't lower, take it back to the dealer. As it is an '09, your warranty should be fine.

Garage
salesman doesn't know what he's talking about. Is there a warning message on the display found between the two instrument roundels?

From what you said, it sounds like you are not holding down the "top down" switch. On a stock SLK-350, you have to hold the switch down the entire time the roof lowers. If the problem was that you had not closed the trunk "inner lid", the roof and windows would not lower at all, and you would see an error on the instrument cluster.

My personal suggestion would be to immediately purchase and install the SmartTop module, or at least as soon as you possibly can. One of its best features, IMHO, is that it changes the function of the "top-down" button so that you only need to click it down once to lower the roof, rather than having to hold it down the entire time.

Well, I'd make sure the top will actually go down with the button before messing about with a SmartTop. If it's not going down, and not throwing a warning up on the console, I'd drive it straight back to the dealer I picked it up from and have a nice coffee while they sorted it out.

If they don't treat you perfectly, ask if they would provide you with the WIS reference for the "can't operate in the cold". When they sputter, ask for another cup of coffee and a C63 for a loaner while they fix your SLK.

Seriously, **** like this gives MB a bad name, and is why dealers are so untrusted - pisses me off.

Agreed. I'd get the dealership to sort that nonsense out before you install the SmartTop.

I've personally never heard that you shouldn't lower/raise the roof in freezing weather. I believe the tops are pneumatically controlled, but still... nobody uses straight water in a pneumatic pump. It's going to be filled with a synthetic oil/grease of some kind that most likely has a freezing point of an insanely low temperature (low enough that you couldn't survive in those temps). Not sure if the car itself prevents roof operation, but I was raising/lowering my roof just a few weeks ago here in Seattle when the temperature was in the 20's for two straight weeks.

I agree with UK-C200... take it back to the dealer and ask them to show you the roof in the shop, where temperatures will be above freezing. If the problem continues, ask for a loaner and make them fix it. If that doesn't work, go to another dealership and send a complaint to Mercedes about the first dealership. Bad Mercedes dealerships don't help any of us. They negatively impact the public's perception of Mercedes, which in turn lowers resale value for ALL of our cars.

I just lowered the roof on a dealer car that's been sitting outside for a month. Worked as it should and took about 20 seconds. The temperature outside has been -5 C to -15 C.
