engine rattle when cold

i have a 2007 slk200 over the past 13 months its been rattling when cold, its been in and out of the dealer ship loads of times where they have had it for over a week on some occasions, they have changed oil and fillter (way before it was due for service) still the same then had hydrolic lifters done still the same, and just had a cracked manifold replaced after they said it was that, guess what still the same, is this a common problem?
ive had slks for years and never had these problems, im begining to lose faith in the service department now,
any ideas as to what i should do.

Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. Your profile is NOT updated in your ‘personal garage’.

New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.

Some engines just rattle on start up. I've heard it often in 4-cylinder engines. I remember Toyota 4-cylinder always rattled on start up. Didn't seem to hurt them, since the engines would go on forever. Perhaps a study of the following will explain engine balance for you:

Don't know about the M271 engine series from personal experience, but having owned a C230 sedan with the previous M111 engine (2.3 liter supercharged) I can attest that if it's been sitting a while, the oil pressure bleeds down out of the lifters and it rattles on startup. Only lasts a second or two, then gets quiet and stays that way. Anecdotal evidence here indicates that the M271 motors do it too. Seems to be a Mercedes-Benz trait. A little lifter noise really isn't a problem.

FWIW our SLK200 does this from cold. Lasts no more than 10-20 seconds then sweet as a nut Not bad for 91000 miles and a testament to it's full MB service history hopefully
