R171--280 or 350

After talking to the dealer, I think i will buy a used R171 . I have a question is there lot difference between 280 and 350, beside engine? And i m in Canada, as you know there is a lot snow...... so is there anybody here is driving slk in winter, and how does it work for you?

I believe the difference in torque and therefore driving characteristics is a tad better in the 350 if you're looking at acceleration. 350 would be my choice between the two.

Hey leleinca - welcome! Update your profile, makes it easier to keep track of where you are. 350's major difference is the engine - it also came standard with 17 inch tires, a different (or at least stiffer?) suspension, bigger vented/drilled front brakes and larger calipers.

I drove all three (280, 350, and 55), and the 350 was the "right" one. Suggest you drive both and see which is right for you.

Can't speak to winter driving, but suspect it's no better or worse than any other RWD car.

I test drove the 280, 350, and 55 AMG. The 280 had the most comfortable ride (probably due to its 16" higher profile and lower speed rated tires) and a lighter, more "free revving" feel. The 350 had more torque and a harder, sportier ride. And while I loved the massive torque of the 55 AMG (who wouldn't) the car just felt too heavy and rough to me -- as I wasn't looking for an all-out screaming racing machine.

I recommend a test drive, not only of the 280 vs. the 350, but also of the various suspension and tire and wheel options available.

I drove a 350 before and changed to the 55 earlier this year. 350 and 55 were the only choice in 2004 back then, so I went with the 350, 280 only became available a year later as 2006 model (I think). Nevertheless, I did sit in a 280 from my friend (also a member of this forum - B4TM4N), but it was during a track event with R-compound tire setup, so that didn't count, plus he drove like there was no tomorrow.

The price difference between a used 280 to 350 will likely be less than new cars with slightly higher mileage, so I will keen on the 350 more because of a more powerful engine, bigger brake...mostly performance related.

Don't get me wrong that a 280 not as nice as 350, it is just as nice as a 350 from the look and ride quality stand point. If you are mostly going for the look of the car, not so much about performance, 280 will be a better choice.

As for winter driving, both car will require snow tires if you intend to drive it during winter time. I live in Toronto and I had snow tire for both 350 and 55 and I use them as my daily ride. The other factor is that 280 will fit on 16" snow tire, but you will need 17" for the 350, more $$.

i think that 350 is a better deal than 280.

for winter they are similar. but if u buy 280 u will be often thinking:" Why i didnt buy 350"

Every sports car is a cross between a race car and a grand touring car. The various sports cars now being made differ in what percentage is race car and what percentage is grand touring. When shopping for an SLK, we already had (and still have) a bit of a "guts for leather" car with more race car in the mix than grand touring. It is a slightly modified Honda S 2000. Race car it is, and grand touring car it is definitely not. So we were more than willing to sacrifice a bit of torque and hp for the softer ride of the 280 with standard wheels, tires and suspension -- instead of going for a 350 which is more of an equal to the S 2000 (which we already have) in terms of performance and ride.

I cite this example for the reason that engine, tire, wheel, and suspension options on the SLK allow the buyer to determine what percent of the car will be race car and what percent will be grand touring. Obviously, we wanted an SLK that would be mainly grand touring, and our 280 "fills the bill". A buyer who want's more of a race car may well come to a different buying decision.

I don't! I have a 300 (rebadged 280) and I'm perfectly happy with it. I felt no need to get a "better" engine. I can't speed anyway because there are too many frikin' cops around here. Besides, it's a smoother ride and it suits the purpose just fine. To me it's more about looks, and I find the power extremely adequate for my needs.

The 300 was over 60k with all the options as it was, I didn't feel that spending more just for the better engine was necessary at all. And resale value wasn't important because I don't believe I'm going to sell it at all.

yr question has a rather simple answer as far as i am concerned:

purchase whatever you can afford!

all models and engines are excellent, there is no such issue as
better or worse handling no matter in what conditions...




just my 2c of course.
