Mercedes Supercars

I've always wondered and correct me if i'm wrong but besides the SLR, why are other Mercedes products not classed as supercars.

I mean people always mention, Lambo, Ferrari, Porsche, Bentley EVEN Audi lately with the R8 but you hardly if ever hear about Mercedes (with the exception of the odd SLR name drop / feature here and there...

Why is this? What about the Black Series or the 55's or the 65's?

Anyone care to comment?

The question is how do you define supercar?

Limited number?
Certain performance values?
Cost?
Production method?

Super car limited number, loud sound, performance, interior, cost, production method, materials, looks.

A Gallardo isnt a supercar and a F430 isnt either, nor is the Audi R8. They are all exotics, a super car starts from the Murcielago LP640, SLR , Bugatti Veyron, Enzo, Carrera GT, Maserati MC12, Ford GT, Spyder, Koeinegsegg.

No clue if this is fact or fiction but I found it on wikipedia when looking up the Koenigsegg (as im not familiar with that car), found this funny anyhow:

During its review of the CCX, BBC television program Top Gear reported that the Koenigsegg CCR holds the fastest speeding ticket in the United States, which was supposedly for 242 mph (389 km/h) in a 75 mph (121 km/h) zone.[1][2] This allegedly occurred in May 2003 in Texas on the San Francisco to Miami Gumball 3000 Rally.[3]

Any 65 series is a supercar.

Alourmi, I beg to differ. All of the 65 series cars are quicker in the quarter mile than the Murcielago LP640, SLR , Enzo, Carrera GT, Maserati MC12, Ford GT, Spyder and Koeinegsegg. And, you can put two blondes in the back seat of the S65 and CL65. I produce SUPERCARS EXPOSED for Speed Channel (actually I created the show, too) and out host, Tanner Foust, drifted and drag raced a CL65, beating some really fast dragsters.

I had an SL65 for a couple of days and got in a race with a CLS63. Not much of a race. In fact, the SL65 is the fastest stock street car I have ever driven. The Murcielago and Viper ACR are close but driving them is some sort of punishment. The Mercedes-Benz' are always a pleasure to drive. If you want them to become a beast, step on it. Otherwise, they are tame. You have a SLK55. That's basically a "sleeper". Meaning, most people don't know how quick your car really is.

Arguably, the 300SL was the first supercar!

Yes what you mentioned has to deal with the torque, if you want as a means of comparison the murcielago non lp640 has lower torque than some pick ups. Weight helps supercars accelerate but say you get a modified truck gmc duramax against a stock C6 it will win due to modified ecu and boost of the turbos.

Mr Dixon, thank you for sharing your comments. Glad we have people such as your like over here.

SL65 is quicker than those supercars, you're joking, right? Stock SL65 runs 1/4 mile in 11.8 @ 120mph. Porsche Carrera GT, Enzo, MC12, Koenigsegg all run near 11 flat and trap over 130mph in the 1/4 mile, which is an enormous difference. LP640 and Ford GT are not nearly as fast, but still much faster than SL65, both trapping around 125-126 in the 1/4 mile and running mid 11's. Even C6 Z06 and Viper will be faster than SL65. SL65 a fast car, but let's not get unrealistic here.. its still a 4,300lbs GT and not a "supercar" by any means.

The 300SL was NOT a Supercar. The "supercar" concept is mucho more modern.
I really don't think a SLR is a supercar. It is expensive, but that's all.
The only supercar Mercedes has built was the CLK-GTR. That is a real supercar.

I have laughed a lot with the comments of Mrjamesidxon about SL65 and CL65, ahahahhhhah. Maybe they can "easily" run faster a quarter of a mile -you only have to push hard the pedal-, but, what happens when a couple of curves come????
Please, lets be serious.
watch this:
If a 360 hp SLK can do this to a SL55, what about a real and true sportscar???

Porsche Turbos and many other cars are going to hand the SL series its ass around the track. The SL series is still very nice in my opinion, but obviously not a Super Car. Just like those modded Vipers with over 1000 HP that couldn't turn to save their lives - what good is that?

Isn't supercar just a label attached to certain automobiles by jounalists. Price, horsepower, rarity all enter into the subjective definition of a supercar. I have a difficult time telling the difference between a supermodel and a regular model. But I like them all. Comparisons of the SL to a Z06 or a Viper are really difficult to understand. Having driven both Vipers and Z06's it seems we are comparing a blunt ax to a scalpel. The SL65 does what it does in a a way that is not easily compared to many other cars. And it is for some the ultimate supercar.
