Tele-Aid/SOS vs. using your own cell phone

These days I believe pretty much everyone has a cell phone on them or in their car most of the time. That leads me to this question:

In case of an emergency, when is it best to call for help with your own phone, versus using the SOS button/Tele-Aid?

My understanding is that the SOS feature is activated automatically under certain conditions such as the air bags deploying. This is a great feature if the driver is not capable of making a call on his/her own. It also transmits location data (and other data?) I believe.

A down side is you can't get out of the car and still talk via Tele-Aid.

Does the SOS call result in a person in a call center being the go-between between you and the emergency services? Is this helpful or does it make things more complicated? Do they patch you through to someone in your area?

Has anyone on this forum used the SOS feature for help, and how did it work out for you?

I've kept up my subscription for the Teleaid mainly in the event I'm unconscious or don't have my phone on me. They also have your GPS coordinates on hand in case you are confused or disoriented....If i'm awake and clear minded i'd rather use a traditional cellphone.

I've used the Teleaid for directions and directory assistance. The service is very courteous but not particularly helpful.

This is an old post but I had a recent experience with the emergency call service and thought I would share my experiences if anyone still has similar questions about it. I got caught in a rainstorm driving home, hydroplaned, lost control, went of the road and eventually hit a tree. I was okay, never lost consciousness and eventually walked away with only a few bruises.

I carry a cellphone with me everywhere and had it in my purse in the seat next to me. The first thing I did was get out of the car and sit down on the ground because I was disoriented and in shock. I hadn't even had a chance to think about my cellphone when I heard someone talking to me through my car speakers. I got back in the car and explained that I was in accident and tried to explain where I was. I was on a country road, so there weren't many intersections and I couldn't remember the last road I had passed. Thinking back, I gave her terrible directions but she was able to use the GPS to figure out where I was. I had no problem hearing her and she directed emergency services to my location.

I don't subscribe to Tele-aid and I never even knew I had an emergency call service before this. Despite having to be in the car to talk, I am really glad I had this even though I also have a cellphone. It was automatically activated and I didn't have to fumble through my purse to find my phone.

On a side note, I was also very impressed with all the other safety features, especially how well the cabin was protected while the rest of the car crumpled around it. I had my seatbelt on and the airbags worked the way they were supposed to. With as much force as I hit the tree with, I feel very fortunate to walk away with no serious injuries.

Glad to know you are fine. I hope it was not the SLK, was it?
