Should I change it?

Now to start off I really, really like my R171 350, love the power and noise in a package that's comfortable for daily driving, however........ in about 2 months Mrs Guru's Mini Cooper SD will be going back, sadly being a diesel it's lost so much of it's value that it's simply not worth keeping so that will leave us down a car. She does occasionally use the SLK but as her commute is a 55 mile round trip on slow country roads this becomes very expensive very quickly.

The same dealer I bought my 350 from (who were very good in the end) have had a R172 250cdi on their forecourt for quite some time and I've talked to them about trading my 350 in against that so the question is should I?

I have briefly driven a 250cdi some time ago but I don't remember it having the same 'character' as the 350. I know I would miss the power and engine note however to be fair the stats say that the 250 is still pretty rapid so could I live with it? The economy would obviously be better then the 350 but is it good enough to use as a daily driver?

Would appreciate any insights especially from anyone who's gone this way or do people normally go from the 350 to the 55? Does the R172 250 make a sensible commuting car?

I had 2004/5 SLK 350 and then went to my 55 and have been ecstatic for 10 years
I had a 2202 SLK 320 and then went to that 350.
I should have gone straight to the 55. Trust me. Get a 55

LOL, that would be an even worse daily driver for Mrs Guru! Sadly the price of fuel over here means that realistically we have to aim for 40+mpg otherwise she will be working just to fill the tank.
The other consideration is that I think I prefer the look of the R171 to the R172, although I may be the only one there?

Why not keep the 350 and trade the mini for a hybrid. Lexus hybrids, for example, have been on the market for a fair few years and are reasonably priced. They are bullet proof and hold better value than oil burners.
I prefer the 171 looks (although I quite like the slc) and I think you might miss the 350.

Sorted! An insane deal on a 200bhp Vauxhall Astra (yes I know!) came along so Mrs Guru will have a new commuting car in December and we can keep the thirsty but fun 350! I'm sure the diesel R172 would have been OK but I just love the character of the big V6

Sounds a bit of a result - At least the Astra is more of a practical car when required & FWD for when We get a dusting of snow on our British roads...!!

...and Yes, the R171 is a lovely shape, even more so on the non-AMG face lift (2008-2011) model

Take your time before you ditch the 350. I've just been out in mine for a blast tonight having just charged up the flat battery. Came back with a big smile on my face. Love the power and the sound of the V6. I can't see a 250 diesel having the same effect somehow 😮. Cheers, Jon.
