Adding DRLs to your SLK

A couple of days ago, @FarWest mentioned he was making plans to add DRLs to his SLK in the 'What did you do to your SLK Today' thread:

I wondered if anyone in the UK has fitted 'switchback' lamps in place of the indicators at all? I wonder if this might be the cleanest way to add DRLs to the car and if there was any effect on the MOT test in the UK? If you've not met the phrase before, Switchback LEDs glow white in normal mode but switch to flashing amber when the turn signal is activated. Then, a short time after the turn signal is cancelled, the white light comes back on again. To understand a bit better, here is a web site with pictures, a video and a better explanation.

Thoughts anyone?

Interesting option.

I'd want to see them in action RL to be convinced, but the idea seems good and simple.

My only concern would be numpties who don't get orange/amber means turn.

Does it comply with the latest MOT listing?

I like that idea, looks like it might fit the holder too. I'd be interested to see the outcome.

There's very little on the Internet yet about the use of these lamps. Plenty of sales outlets though!!

I'll ask my mechanic when he's back from his holidays. Meanwhile if anyone's tried these can you pop your thoughts on the end of the thread?

Thanks

Thanks for this. Brilliant idea; no pun intended. Would think in the UK it would be down to how the MOT tester interprets the regs and/or runs the test.

I've had a chat with my MOT tester and looked where I can at the MOT regs and the following summarises where I am now:

  • This may have to become a UK-only thread, but bear with me for the moment
  • My MOT tester says that "providing the indicator clearly 'indicates' as it should when requested then that's OK"
  • Looking on this site the tester will check "Side marker lamps", "Daytime running lamps" (for vehicles made after 1st March 2018 - so not relevant to Silkie) and "Direction indicators and hazard warning lamps"
  • Lamps are tested for presence, condition and operation. Indicators are also tested for flashing frequency.

  • Turning to the car itself, the plug-in switchback LED will need to fit securely and water tight in the indicator housing. On Silkie this is easy.
  • I will need to mount the resistors somewhere they won't get in the way
  • I *should* arrange a relay so that the DRLs don't come on when the headlamps are on, and I will probably need to uprate the cabling used.
  • The connection from the switchback LED to the old lamp holder will need to be made watertight (perhaps heatshrink sleeving?) to avoid most of the issues complained about in the lamp reviews

So now to choose a suitable set of lamps!
