Have a convertible but drive top up or top down? - Poll included

This morning on my drive to work, weather was very nice for top-down driving - sunny, 79F, clear blue sky, light winds, dry, and not a whiff of cloud anywhere... As usual, I was top down enjoying the ride only to find several other convertible drivers with their tops up. What is that? I mean, if you own a convertible, and it is a gorgeous day to put your roof down, why not? Which made me want to ask this forum members, what proportion of the time do SLK owners drive with their top up or down?

I have included a poll.

At 79, agree top should be down. Only time it's up for me is if the heat beat me down after 2 hr with the desert sun beating down on me. OR it starts to rain and I didn't expect it to.

In the rain BTW, that's only if I can't drive fast enough for it to just scoot over the top of the windshield

Roof down unless boots full, raining or really cold.
Ours are driven all year round hate when I have to drive the 4x4 and that’s only when I have to take passangers.

In Kansas, it is honestly so windy most of the time that driving with the top down is just obnoxious... Cant hear the music, every car that passes you causes anything not tied down in the car to go flying and it's just generally annoying.

however, I dealt with it this morning because it's been so long since I went top down. it was enjoyable.

Maybe Kansas is not a state amenable to owning or driving a convertible Wanna move out to Cali or Texas or Floriduh? I am sure Jeff would love to have one more owner added to the club down there....

It's my almost daily driver (other is a mc) so that includes the bad seasons. That way it's easy to get to >50% top up. It's parked out on the street so I can't leave the top open so for short rides I don't bother getting the top down. Highway driving almost always top up. That leaves the casual riding on local roads. With 20K (kms) a year I don't think that's most of my mileage.

Garaged so simple: if over 90F or looks like rain top is up. If dry and under 80, top is down. Otherwise stays the way it was parked.

3D printer is here so will be developing a wind deflector, think mirror is channeling wind to face. Don't hold your breath, now is mostly AC time.

My general rule: if it's at least 50°F and not raining, the top is down. The heat may be blasting and the side windows up, but the top will be down.

I don't have an upper temperature limit. It's been 110°F and I've be standing still at a red light on jet black asphalt and I didn't put it up.

If the top's not down, then why did I buy a convertible?

You spoke for me.. in plain English, thank you. I am in the 0-5% voting group poll on this thread, bcos I bought a convertible to drive top-down always. Else I will buy a sedan and not bother....

Mabel's top is down at every opportunity. As she's my daily drive that includes winter too. I think nothing of dropping it when it's 2c (as long as it's dry), just turn on the heated seats, air scarf, and turn up the heater. get some strange looks though.

The only times I drive top up is when it's inclement weather and if I'm on a busy motorway/highway with lots of other cars and lorries all belching out fumes. Like @DAVIETHESCAFF I'm out and about whatever the outside temperature. -2° C is my lowest - albeit not for very long.

It's getting to the point where I live that I avoid motorways - although I am quite happy to let everyone else follow their sat-nav-noses on them

Blimey! 79F equates to 26.5 degrees C!

My roof is down if the sky is clear and the temperature is 10 degrees or more.

Last winter we had a few really dry spells and the car came out of the Garage and ran to work, top down with the OAT at 7 degrees!

26.5 .......... with the roof up, may as well buy a C63 Coupe without the convertible top!

Perhaps I’m a bit obsessed but last winter saw me hood down at -8C. (Only once!)

Normally, dry and bright is enough.

In the UK the convertible police will impound your car if you have the hood up in the sunshine.

I see a lot of SLKs around but rarely with their roof down.

I think they look so good roof up, that I can imagine people would buy one never intending to lower the roof, just like it as a coupe’, afterall people buy Z4 coupes and Caymans.
or maybe some just like the cache’ of owning a convertible and the idea that they could put it down on a whim but can’t remember the last time they did, but that’s ok too, each to their own..

I read the R170 roof was tested to 20,000 cycles and I fully intend to surpass that number.

If it’s not raining or not more than 38 C, then the roof is down.
All that sunlight is good for fending off the winter blues too.

Guess I should mention that here we get over 50" of rainfall mostly in 120 days (Mid-June to Mid Sept). If driving over 20 miles after noon it will probably rain somewhere (Today I drove for lunch to Clermont. About 20 miles. Bright sun but 95F/90% when I left so AC on. About 2/3 of the way there it started raining. Visibility down to under 50 feet. Low spots flooding. Temperature dropped 20F. Stopped shortly before I arrived at the destination.

From mid-Sept to mid-June we have mostly glorious weather that we put up with summer for & top is usually down. At present have the SLK, another convertible, and three fixed roof cars in the garage so can chose what is appropriate.

Those are the idiots that are (mostly) native to Texas, for sure. I hear you 100%on that. We really need highway patrol to start ticketing people for impeding the flow of traffic. Cruising in the left lane at 50-55mph in a 70-75mph zone (where most people should be going 80mph minimum if in the FAST lane), with a congo line of cars stuck behind them due to lack of gaps in traffic. I utterly cannot stand those people. Sorry officer I know I was passing in the right lane but the guy was going 20mph under the limit! Looking forward to the 43 for more top end passing power at highway speeds than my 350 <img src="https://www.slkworld.com/images/smilies/.gif" border="0" alt="" title="LOL" class="inlineimg" />.

As for the poll, I am about 50/50. I dont like texas summers, so June to early October when its 95-105F I tend to go top up because the heat is unbearable. But Mid Oct until late May it's down unless it's raining! Leaving work and waiting till the first red light to drop the top (because I am in a hurry to get as far from the hospital as fast as possible), I get some weird looks from people. Especially in the "frigid" texas winter temps of (occassionally) 35-50 degrees F. I need to move back north , but then baby might rust!
