SLK Purchase Advice

Hello all,

I am looking to join the world of SLK ownership but would like to pick your collective brain's first.

Whatever I get it is only going to be an occasional use car so I am looking for something that is ideally going to become a bit of an appreciating classic. I have been looking at the 350s but seem to keep getting drawn in by the 320 mk1s due to the value for money.

I appreciate that the 320s are slower than the 350s but a well kept 320 has got to be a good investment at this point I would have thought.

So I guess I am looking for opinons on where I would be better spending my money. A nice 320 R170 or a nice 350 R171?

Why can't they start appreciating? I have a 1995 MG RV8 that is going up in value every year, so the same could start to happen to the SLKs.

All r170s do now is rust

check this checklist. it also has a r171 buying guide ot help you

https://www.slkworld.com/general-disc...checklist.html

Have had both and prefer either the SLK320 or the later R171 that had a functional Bluetooth and is beyond the balance shaft issue.

The major difference is the R171 is prettier and the R170 is about $3k cheaper. Am not sure when the SLK got a real touchscreen but may have been the R172 (my 88 Buick has a touchscreen). It is easy to add a Bluetooth head unit to a R170. Not so for a R171.

If you want speed then the SLK32 (AMG) is faster than a SLK350.

Some cars of the 70s are starting to appreciate but I buy cars to enjoy. Usually takes about 25 years unless really rare and desirable. Are too many low milage (under 100k) rust free SLKs for sale in central Florida to appreciate.

Just my opinion.

170 over in uk land im starting to see them fetching higher prices now days if its a very clean example right model / colour and real low mileage .

Finding one yes but departing with the cash they want thats your choice .
There starting at well above Ł6000.00 plus .....

But its finding one that has been pampered all its life and garaged .
Other wise the dreaded rust is there in the usual places .

Slk 170 32 51 plate Ł9.995.00 on Auto trader now !

In my oppinion (for what it is worth )

If you want to buy a SLK with a view it will become an appreciating clasic you have to go for one of the AMG models

Everything else will always be in the shadow of these cars

I think the 320 and 55 will get to the "clasic" status, but still a few more years yet.

Unless you are looking at keeping long term, I'd forget the classic factor for now.

As said, there's AMGs on the threshold of gaining value, but it'll be some time before they really pic up big numbers.

My view is somewhat wider.
The very fact that cars like the 230 R170 are starting to rust leads to the potential for a well kept one to hit classic value.

As for which model, engine etc you really need to drive them.

I found our first SLK R170 230 great fun down the lanes and could get into the making use of approaching 100% of what the car has to offer excellent for grin factor.

I now have a 55 R171. I truly love the car, cannot see what I'd replace it with except another of the same and only if I had to.
I drive a 350 R171 regularly. Again great fun and can be made to 'move at pace'. But it a different animal to the 55.
Not better, not worse, just different.

Then we move into parts. Have a look through here and the 55 shows higher cost for brakes, especially the 6 pot fronts.

Have a drive, see how they feel for you.

Please catch up with that intro. You do not have to own an SLK/C to do this, it's for hunters too.

Agree with some of the above.

In the UK at least there is still a secondhand oversupply in most of the SLK range except the AMG's. Of all the range the 55 is the one that is going to be an appreciator first and good ones are already holding their value. To be fair even early 280 and 350 171's haven't dropped in price here over the last 12 months but there's certainly no shortage of them to choose from on forecourts either and they aren't going to become classics.

The current trend towards green motoring means that having a large V8 shoved into a 2-seat convertible by a major manufacturer for mainstream consumption is going to become a thing of the past so good 55's are going to be sought after providing the government don't price them off the road to force us all to move to self-driving electric shoe boxes. Even then their value isn't going to jump overnight as there's no shortage of high performance, big engine'd cars coming off the production lines still.

Seeing as you're not looking in the 55's price bracket though I'd just go for a tidy example of whichever takes your fancy and enjoy it for what it is. I looked at both 170's and 171's and went for the latter as I preferred the looks and felt the 171 was just a bit roomier, more refined and less prone to rust than the 170. I needed a daily driver though so your criteria are different.

"All r170s do now is rust " well since mine has no rust... OTOH is what I would expect from an r171 owner. Had a 171. Prettier than a 170 but too much bling and no Bluetooth or touchscream. Suspect my next one will be a 172 with the DI V6 once there is a bit more depreciation.

OTOH can work on a SLK320 without a mainframe or it calling home. And lots of parts available. Just suits me.
