Buy or walk away?

I've been shopping for a sporty car for some time now. Long story short is that I wanted a 2016 Cayman and was ready to buy. Just before I found the right one, the VW diesel issues were announced. My daily driver and trade in vehicle is a 2014 Jetta TDI. I've very patiently waiting for VW to come up with a fix and allow me to trade in my Jetta, but it hasn't happened and six months have pasted. As time has passed, I've lost interest in supporting the VW enterprise. I'm unhappy with how this has all shaped out and I'm moving on.

The SLK is where I'm at, but still can't buy new without trading in the Jetta. Coincidentally, a 2006 SLK350 with 66k miles came up for sale. It's mint, black with red leather, and I can pick it up for 15k, which I can do today.
The catch - after driving it, I got out and my butt was damp. The roof has been leaking. When I questioned it, the owner of the used car dealership said it drips when it rains - they all do it, it is what it is, no big deal. It's a big deal for me. I won't keep it in a garage, other than winter time. I've searched the forum and found tons of stories about having the roof replaced and it seems like sometimes it fixes it, sometimes it doesn't. It seems like most were having it replaced under warranty, which if course this wouldn't me. Is there a chance of fixing it with new seals and adjustments, or is it likely a lost cause?

I really like the car. I'd likely keep it for three or four years before getting something new. For SLK enthusiast, should I buy and take my chances or should I walk away? Are there other common issues I should look for? I'm new to MB.

Thanks,
Brad

Question

The Roof should not Leak. Onto the Seat? Is there a Hole in the roof?
There are plenty of cars out there. Walk away unless you are happy you can fix it.
The Dealer would have been better saying he left the Roof down when it rained.
There are lots of Seals and they will need looking after, it is hard to say where any water could have come from. Do the side windows go all the way up? They drop slightly when the door is opened, this is normal.

Cheers Russ

Brad, my two cents: Do not walk away, but RUN away instead
You cannot tell how the moisture has already caused rust (e.g. underneath the carpet) or done damage to the electronics.

Really, I believe that SOME moisture might get into the R171 during heavy rains, but all other cases indicate a total lack of maintenance and care to me.
If the previous owner(s) never bothered about moisture, then I well imagine the other parts of the car were treated with a similar type of "love and affection"...

There are more cars available than this particular one... no matter how low the price, keeping this one for some time will likely turn into a nightmare...

Brad

I moved your thread to r171 General discussion from general discussion

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Valrico, Florida!

Please update your vehicle (Put Looking!)(model and year,ie 2007 SLK 350) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t.
Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘vehicle’. Your profile is NOT updated in your ‘personal garage’.

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.
Post your vin in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on your car). You must update your profile with vehicle info and your location and post an introduction first.

Hi Brad, and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us!

Taking on an SLK that has a leaking roof can be risky. It might be something simple like the seals just need treating and lubricating (link), or it might be something much more serious, which may already have caused others issues (as has been suggested by others).

In the meantime, please update your profile with your location and vehicle (put "Still looking" for now), if you haven’t already done so, as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information.
Follow this to update: ‘User CP’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’ (and then click ‘SAVE CHANGES’ button at the bottom of the page). Info in your garage does not update your profile.

And then, please post a brief introduction thread...
Your 1st thread should be your introduction so we can welcome you properly so post an introduction in the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section, if you haven’t already:

Thanks
Dave

My roof leaked slightly under heavy rain when I got it, entering by the joint between the windshield and the roof above the windows, which the dripped on the seat.
A couple of treatments with Gummi Pflege and a little ajustment to the roof latches sorted it out with no other problems...

Hi Brad

Welcome from Wirral, England.

Check out this thread to make sure you don't buy a lemon (I didn't and I did get a lemon).
https://www.slkworld.com/general-disc...checklist.html

The 'they all do it' bull is exactly that. They only leak if there is a fault. Sometimes easy to fix, sometimes not.

There is a youtube clip that has MB mechs explaining how to adjust the gaps between windows and roof as well as roof/windscreen.
Just can't find it.

I'm pretty sure it was from a link on this forum and if memory serves it was a black r171. and mech had German accent.

I agree with Arjen. Let it slide. I have had two, including my current one, an '04. No leaks in either. Lots of others are out there, just be patient!

It's a rubber lubricant and treatment that helps restore rubber seals and keeps your car dry and squeak-free.. Try Amazon.

The roof replacements you've read about here are for the pano roof, not the solid roof as on the 06's.

It's usually the seals, which can be treated, adjusted, or replaced. There's a pretty good video of how to adjust them floating around (sorry no link).

I'd use it as a bargaining chip.
