Don't know what to do...

**Updates in post #8 and 14.

So I ordered my SLK55 way back in February, missing the end of the 2007 model year by a week. Per the dealer, I was originally targeting late June/early July as the delivery date. As it got closer to the actual start of the 2008 production, it became late July/early August. Now, my scheduled build date is Aug 13th, which I assume would mean a delivery date of mid(?) September. I've waited so long now, I've started waivering on my decision.

For starters, my current car is due back the 3rd week of August. I had originally planned to enjoy the SLK for the summer and fall, then pick up something "relatively" less expensive as a daily driver and for winter. Now, the fact that I would be without a car for possibly as long as a month forced me to start looking at new cars, and I started targeting the AWD sedan market for both practicality and daily use. I jumped between several cars, and ended up at a local Infiniti dealer this weekend. I test drove a 2007 G35x, and ended up putting a refundable deposit on one coming from their factory allocation in 2 weeks. Now, I'm stuck with a decision...

Do I pick up the G35x and hold off on the SLK, considering the fact that I'll have maybe 2 months to enjoy it before the weather takes a turn in the NE?

Do I say nevermind to the G35x and do who knows what and eventually pick up the SLK?

Do I get both?

I seriously don't know what to do now. I really wanted the car bad when I ordered it, and now the voice of everyone around me telling me to be practical has gotten into my head. Would I be crazy to spend a little under 1/3 of my monthly salary on two cars? I travel a lot for business, so a lot of my living expenses are paid for, but it also means I'm currently not driving a car every other week. However, there's currently the possibility that I'll end up with an apt paid for out by this client for an extended period of time, which would allow me to bring a car here for the 75% of the time I'd be here and have the 2nd one at home for when I'm there. It's also killing me that I feel like I have such a great price on the one ordered (which was great even before the $500 increase for 2008 that the dealer said wouldn't effect me way back when) and now I'm thinking about backing out of it.

Should I be shot for thinking about picking up a 2008 corvette in the spring instead? The new LS3 will do 0-60 in 4.2, even in an auto, and the 1/4 in 12.1 or 12.2...

Get the SLK 55. You're only looking at two months max after waiting five, could be less. It doesn't get any better than a new 2008 factory ordered SLK 55. Can't answer the question, one car or two. I'm a car nut and more is better for me.

Go to your MB dealer and tell him your ideas. It´s tremendous to get the SLK so much later. He shall do something (more) not to lose his order. Just to call you - your car is coming later - is too less. Kick him.

since you have such a great car en route, i wouldn't pass it up. you will love the 55, but, as Gero said, use the delay(s) as a means to barter with your dealer. you have the leverage and should use it to your advantage. certainly they can throw in something like a winschott, car cover, golf bag, or other comparable item(s) to apologize for making you wait the extra time.

Just my humble opinion, as what V8SLK stated, use the delay and tell the MB salesperson you're having 2nd thoughts and see if they can get you some freebies. I would definitely ask for the Lexan windscreen and all-weather floor mats.

As for a second vehicle: I would suggest something practical, reasonably priced, 4WD for PA and not worry about race track-like performance. How about a Subaru 4WD station wagon?

If it helps with the decision to get the SLK, I drive my SLK ALL year long. I do put on winter wheels and tires, but I thought it has done quite well in our winters... So no reason to garage it...

Wait for the 55 and please consider other members suggestions, I assume you can haggle with the price even more and the dealer might add an Ipod kit, Bluetooth hub and such accessory items.

You have waited 5 months already why not wait two more months. The SLK55 is truly nothing short of fantastic.

Hey guys, so a quick update. The G35x came in a week early, so I ended up picking it up last Saturday. It's really nice...Platinum Graphite exterior, Graphite interior with African Rosewood trim, tons of nice features, sporty, etc. I went into the Mercedes dealer yesterday to talk to them about what I wanted to do. My salesman had just gone home for the day and is going to be out this week, so I was ready to leave when another one offered to check on the status for me. So, I figured what the hell.

As of the 1st week of July when I called to check on production, my build date was 8/13. Well, we went into the computer to check on the order and couldn't find it anywhere. Finally, we tried "Produced-Shipped" and what do you know, there it was. I don't know how, or if my salesman even knew, but the car was built on 7/18, went to port on 7/21, was assigned a ship on 7/24, and was on the water as of 7/26. ETA into port in Baltimore (~150 miles from the dealer) is 8/6! Figuring another 5-7 days to come into the dealer and be prepped, it will be ready for delivery exactly 2 weeks from now...

So, had I known that 2 weeks ago, I would have held off on getting the Infiniti, gotten the SLK now, and worried about a 2nd car down the road. Now I'm already committed to the G, and I have to decide whether or not I can still get the SLK. I want to, and I'm heavily leaning towards it, but I'll make up my mind for sure in the next 2 weeks...it just irks me because the timing is perfect, and had I known this when the damn VIN was assigned on 7/12, I wouldn't have anything to think about...

You should wait for the SLK55... but it looks like you should've bought it used or new from the dealer instead instead of waiting for one. Why not just cancel it and get one now? Plenty of dealers have new 07's sitting on the lot that they will sell you for below MSRP. Or even better, get an 05 SLK55 for under 50,000$ if you're worried about being able to afford one.

I agree with Speed. Your already committed to the Infinity. Wait for the 2008 SLK 55 to arrive at your dealer. Give it a good look over and decide if you got to have it or you can wait for something else. Many 2005 and 2006 SLKs available online for less than 50K. If you can swing it, get the 2008 SLK 55 you ordered and waited for. Good luck in your decision.

Decisions, decisions

If you are an SLK lover you will get the SLK. As for the G35 give it back immediately and take a small loss ($2-3,000)for the time you have had it. If the delaership won't work with you make the Benz dealership sell it on consignment so you can get out from under it. If you want another car keep the crossfire and just for fun throw another $5000 into it to make it a little more one of a kind and you will get a few more years of good times out of it and still be way ahead on money spent. It is not a financial investment you will not get the money back on trade or sell but your investment will pay off in fun if you get creative and trick the car out right.
It's all about the fun my friend.

Wait for the SLK

I drive my SLK all winter also. Of, course you will need an extra set of wheels and tires dedicated for cold weather use. You should be able to get a set for about $2500 or so. So, tell your dealer to knock off a few grand for your trouble and the delay. Use the extra money to get your winter gear. You won't regret it!!

I thought about that, but the whole idea for the 2nd car was something larger, back seat, AWD, etc, and the crossfire is none of that.

I also thought about trying to get out of the G35, but yeah, the lease deals were much better than the finance deals on it, so you can guess what I did...(aside from now having a much lower monthly payment than if I had bought it). The funny thing though is that my father really likes the G35, and I just had a conversation about him taking over the lease if he was interested (and he was), and I would trade in his current car on the Mercedes Benz as long as they gave us what was owed on it. Is it possible to get a lease like that transferred into someone else's name, or would he basically be paying on my lease?

Of course, I can also just say F-it and get both and be happy with both.

Oh, and as for used ones or '07s, I haven't seen many, if any, around the area and in searching online. The problem is that I'm picky and figure if I'm gonna spend that much, it might as well be the color I want, etc. If someone found something close to what's in my sig used, I'd probably be all over it.

Lastly, as far as price, I don't know that they can do much better than what I'm at. We're talking about a sticker of $69,255 after gas guzzler tax and delivery, and my negotiated price is currently $65,000. To be fair, I added the DACC a few months after the car was ordered, so I don't know if they'll try to add that back in (if they realize), but I wouldn't pay more than their cost on it, which would bring it to $65,670. I don't know how realistic it is to expect them to come down on this number. Instead, if I could get special financing like the 3.9% they have going on for the summer sales event instead of standard 6-6.5% rates, I think that would seal the deal for me. Is that even possible?

I have never driven in the snow. Is this really a problem for a SLK?

OK, my life has been in Bangkok, Florida, England and California.

So, is snow really bad?

You just made the #1 mistake of buying used cars: limiting your search to your area. What you have to do is search country wide and be patient, in the end it will end up costing you far less even with the shipping cost. It took me a month to find the perfect SLK55 with all the options I wanted, it was basically brand new 06 w/ 5k miles, $70,000 MSRP and I was able to get it for $54,000... 26,000$ under MSRP. The only minor problem was that the car was in Kansas and had to be shipped to Florida, but it was around 1,000$ enclosed and insured and got here in 4 days. I guarantee you that shipping the car will be much less of a headache than waiting God knows how long to get it.

Well you cant drive it in the arctic Corkscrew mate but a little sprinkle of snow wont do it any harm so long as you drive careful.

I have never seen the need for winter tires either all Merc's come with summer tires on them and i don't know of one owner in the UK who changes to winters and we have some bad weather, its just common sense if the weather is bad drive slower the tires are irrelevant we're not talking racing slicks here they have to be OK in all conditions to get approved any summer/winter marking is purely branding.

MDLSLK55, Get the SLK its impossible to compare both cars your going to need a daily driver for when the weather is crap but the SLK can take more than a drop or two of rain and keep on going its all just common sense you know, personally for the price of a second car its not worth the risk tires wont help you at all 360bhp will decide what the car does not a tiny ass contact patch i used to buy a cheap ass second car my last one was an X registration (year 2000) Vauxhall Astra cost like 2/3k and it did the job and cause it was so cheap if i wrapped it around a tree all it meant was i had to walk home.

I would not use a new car in bad weather no matter what the make.

MDLSLK55 - What's DACC? Not familiar with that term. I still say get the 2008 SLK 55 you ordered if you can make it work. Still, the right used SLK 55 is a great second choice. I have other vehicles and don't use my SLK in bad weather.

I've looked across the country on several sites, but I never really found anything (maybe 1 or 2). What would you suggest using to search?
