Exclamation Climate concerns may soon outlaw sports cars in Europe...

Perhaps this is a bit alarmist, but it made the news on this side of the pond.

Climate concerns may soon outlaw sports cars in Europe...

Quote:
Fast, powerful cars within a few years may be outlawed in Europe, an idea that has been raised ostensibly because Ferraris and Porsches produce too much carbon dioxide. For those who abhor sports cars as vulgar symbols of affluence (along with vacation homes, furs and fancy jewelry), such a ban could be a two-fer: Saving the planet while cutting economic inequality.

There are loads of green idiots knocking about over here no doubt but they wont get anything near a ban car manufacturers have muscles big enough to easy see off this sort of threat.

Like there was an argument about putting 70mph limiters on cars, the German auto makers said shove it and got all the support they needed.

The problem is the green groups do not really understand the processes involved they think that speed equals death and when its not directly killing people its polluting and thats death by proxy.

They don't understand a modern sports car engine is as efficient as an internal combustion engine is going to get and thanks to strict fueling and exhaust controls produces very few harmful emissions in the overall scheme of things, but as i said they cant understand that and would prefer us to drive around in cars with tiny engines being worked to destruction and causing more pollution or using electric cars and such like and that does no good at all the pollution is simply taken away from the exhaust and given to the power station.

Yet while all this goes on the idiots in 10 year old cars happy drive on causing real damage, and i would also like to point out most of the people who come up with these stupid ideas drive big luxury cars so its hardly a case of practice what you preach.

I heard once that when you fill your tank with fuel, if you get a small drip of fuel off the end of the filler hose onto the ground, this causes more pollution, than all the fuel that is burnt by the engine. Good news is, if the 'Greenies' get their way, if 'nasty polluting cars' like ours are banned, the law can never be applied retrospectively, if you already have one, you can carry on driving it till it gets baled!!

They added 90kmh speedlimit in many Highways in France, such as the one connects Nice and Cannes.

I enjoy the routes in Europe, its very fun to drive and the views are splendid. Its sad to see if they take strong actions to limit pollution and spoil the fun for sports car owners and such.

Here in Alabama we don't have any smog/emmission laws. They are going nuts with the "if we lower the speed limit it will save lives". Only where the interstate passes through big cities but it is rediculous. Well I think so at last. I mean if that crap was true lets lower it to 5mph, I mean that could save thousands of lives a year.

I guess I just don't understand how 50 years ago we had 70mph speed limits and no seat belts and now a days the cars are 1000x safer and have better brakes, and response in the area of accidence avoidance but yet they cut it down to 50mph outside and through the city.

Hi all,

this headline was in the news four weeks ago in Germany to start the -political- silly season. At least once a year a 100 km/h speed limit discussion for the autobahn is starting. Now we have the technical version started from the European parliament.

Two examples in addition to Dan's very good explanation:

I am reading a German car magazine. There are articles on the last page of their own tests 40 years ago. I must always smile when read about the "good" fuel consumption around 15 l/100 km for those 70 hp medium-sized vehicles. If I want to reach that in average with my SLK with 200 hp more, I must start always with a burn-out or drive constantly faster than 200 km/h.
In other words: The current engines are as efficient and economical as ever.

This evenig an old compact car stopped at a traffic light in front of me. After swiching over to green this car tried to start in dark cloud of exhaust. Nice smell for me with opened roof. But on the trunk was a sticker: "no nuclear energy" ....

It was a sticker against nuclear power plants.
As far as I know nuclear engines for cars haven't been developed yet.

A few oz. of the nuclear fuel and your car can go on for years, not to mention glow-in-the-dark feature
