Bad Mercedes Benz representation in Costa Rica

I bought my SLK 230K in the US an exported it to Costa Rica... Well.. a few days ago the "check engine" lit up. As the manual instructed, I called the nearest MB representative, a company named AutoStar, the only authorized MB agency in Costa Rica. To my surprise they asked me if I bought my car from them, and as I didn't they said they couldn't service it, nor recommend any unofficial shop!!! So basically There is NO official Mercedes Benz representation in Costa Rica, as my car clearly IS a Mercedes Benz, an no one can service it. I seriously doubt this is a Daimler policy, as a MB is a MB no matter where you buy it, no matter how old or which model it is!

Oh and BTW They said they can service my car if I pay $10.000 fee (For not buying the car from them... absurd and ridiculous!)

Wow, talk about a captive audience that is being taken advantage of. Sorry to hear of your woes, however, a lot of things can be fixed by using the Search function and wealth of knowledge of those that have gone before you. Best of luck.

It's probably not as bad as it seems. AutoStar certainly doesn't act like they want your business! As your car is after 1996 it has a common On Board Diagnostic (OBD) port. Most common OBD Readers (small hand held device) will plug into your car's port and can tell you what the Check Engine Light (CEL) code is and what it means. Hopefully it is a minor one, like the last one mine threw at me (P009A-High Ambient Air Temperature). You should call around and see if any of your local repair shops have an OBD reader. In the states the Auto Parts stores like AutoZone etc. have the readers and will read the codes for free.

It doesn't sound like you have a warranty on your car, so if not you are now in the "find a repair shop you can trust that has some experience with M-B cars" mode. Another advantage you have is this site. The more you know about what's wrong (CEL Code, other things the car is doing out of the ordinary) the easier it will be to find on here what may be wrong with the car and how you may fix it.

Regardless, I hope that you find what you're looking for. Once you know more feel free to post it here. There are lots of smart experienced people on here with your model car, and they are usually glad to help out a fellow SLK owner.

Best Wishes

Thanks! Well... I had a pretty damaged alternator... for some reason the cover was cracked and the magnets were exposed. I had no clue about this until I had the oil changed, and the guy changing it called me to point that out.... Nothing seemed wrong with the car, but anyway I ordered an Alternator (As this is Costa Rica, orders may last up to 3 weeks to be delivered). A few days after having the oil changed the battery light lit up on slow revs... like at stops... but on the go it slowly faded to normal (unlit) until the next stop... So I pretty much figured out it was the broken alternator asking to be replaced... But then at some point the check engine was also on, but the next day it was off...
And then on again... the alternator finally arrived... I took it to the nearest shop and a guy replaced it for me ($40 only). The check engine was off by then... and he said I better check the transmission fluid as it seems to be a small leak.
And at night the check engine lit again.... but this time I have the new alternator installed! so... it wasn't that! :/

Oil change -> Bad alternator discovered
Alternator replacement -> Transmission Fluid leak discovered.

I wonder what will be the next discovery! haha.

Has anyone tried something like: http://www.amazon.com/goPoint-Technology-OBD-II-Accessory-iPhone/dp/B00336S7KS/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1340940542&sr=8-7&keywords=OBD-II
To diagnose the "check engine" light? Any recommendation? $98 seems to be slightly less than the $10.000 AutoStar wants!
