Some weeks ago my dealer arranged for AMG drive days @ Hockenheim and a visit to both AMG & Mercedes Benz Sindelfingen.
Today I got to visit AMG but missed the main plant tour due to running way over time so tomorrow the wife & I are off to Mercedes Benz Sindelfingen.
It was a great experience to visit the AMG factory and the little things they do like having an Australian flag up for us was awesome....lucky for us we had a guide and just my wife and I and were shown the whole place including some development cars unseen, the engine test bed where they run the motors testing, the main engine plant for both the N/A and turbo motors. Was also given a update on a few new things to hit the market soon....can't say too much but I have changed my order accordingly.
Got to see the DTM cars being built and the AMG SLS GT cars too...as for the one man one engine in reality it is still an assembly line and guys works on these engine trolleys from start to finish...the final guy hardly does a thing but stamps his name on the plate...average age of an AMG employee is 39 and there were heaps of guys aged 25+ doing the engine building including 2 chicks.
Unfortunately the photos are only from the areas I was allowed to shoot from but some of the custom cars I saw were awesome let alone the cars they were building....there was a whole lot of C63 Blacks, SLK 55's, armoured G Wagens and about 10 hoists were dedicated to cleaning up all the older AMG's for a big AMG car show given it is the 45th birthday. All the AMG's were present from the Hammer, SL 55 etc....
Worst car I saw was an Aqua coloured E63 Estate with carbon breaks for leading German porno maker.....that really does not narrow it down really.
We still went to Sindelfingen (given we are only down the road) around 3pm and surprisingly got a drive and climb all over the new A Class. Also saw the delivery hanger which is like a airport for customers to pick up there new cars...even Americans were there to drive them on holidays then MB arrange transport back to the states.
The SLS course car was a former test bed car they can't register the car so this was the first SLS Course car with the carbon engine bay too.
The touch screen on the wall had previous AMG work....love the retro updates on the Gullwing & Roadster.
As for the new A Class awesome little car and should sell plenty.
Sounds like you had a great time - wish I had the time to make the tour, but just too busy with work right now. I saw in your post 'Was also given a update on a few new things to hit the market soon....can't say too much but I have changed my order accordingly.' Well, well, well - I just happen to have a 2013 SLK55 AMG on order right now and am VERY curious if there's anything you saw or know about that you think others might want to follow up on?? Would it be worth it for me to try to contact them over there to find out what the new 'things' to hit the market soon'? Really curious now. Anyway, thanks for the great post. I'm really stoked to get mine!
