Need opinion about SLK280....

Hi folks,
I'm planning a purchase of a new 2005 SLK 280
Below is some detail I found online...

The 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a 2-door, 2-passenger convertible sports car, available in 3 trims, ranging from the SLWhK280 Roadster to the SLK55 AMG Roadster. Upon introduction, the SLK280 Roadster is equipped with a standard 3.0-liter, V6, 228-horsepower engine that achieves 19-mpg in the city and 27-mpg on the highway. A 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard, and a 7-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional. The SLK55 AMG Roadster is equipped with a standard 5.5-liter, V8, 355-horsepower engine that achieves 16-mpg in the city and 22-mpg on the highway. A 7-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard.....

I need some input regarding fuel consumption and also its engine performance. I'm a first-time SLK owner and haven't driven a SLK before nor am I a big fan of car engine. Is there a big difference between V6 engine versus one from SLK 200?
What are those things that you pay attention to before getting one?

Besides, are there any other things that worth paying attention to after purchasing one? What about the maintainence aspect? Any input?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Ken

Good luck on your pending purchase. The SLK 280 is a fine car. Can't answer any questions that would help. Was there a SLK 280 in 2005? I thought the first year available was 2006?

Depending on how you drive, you will find that the V6 engine gets good gas mileage and great performance. Mileage depends on how agressively you drive. I found I can stretch out my mileage, but most of the time I don't. Highway driving of course is where you will get your best mileage. SLK200 is ( I believe)Compressor driven 2 liter 4 cylinder engine marketed in Europe and Asia.

In the US maintenance for me has been great. MB is willing to fix items, especially under warranty, if you treat the car nicely you will find maintenance to be low and easy. Oil changes are 13,000 miles apart due to the new synthetic and engine monitoring systems.

Feel free to ask more questions.

Welcome to the best forum regarding the SLK. Plenty of info here. The 230 I have is super, enough power, good mileage and funner than spankin the monkey. Suggest you look back at previous posts as many thoughts and much info is there. I am still finding info after three months. The v6 is enough power for the normal driving person and will very likely serve you well. If you are on the other hand a speed demon, jump up to the AMG55. What a blast, rode in one the other day and the difference is ,,,,, well,,,,, worth the money. Hope you get the car and participate here alot. Enjoy the fun, stories and information...

Welcome Ken, with Green Air Filters, the SLK 280 can achieve about 28 to 29 mpg highway easily. Driving habits do affect fuel economy. My combined fuel economy is 24 mpg (US gallons). Since you made reference to the SLK 200, I presume you're either in Europe or Asia (It would help those who answer your post tremendously if you update your profile to include at least the country).

I believe Ken may have made a typo error (he probably meant 2006) and you're right -1-, the SLK 280 wasn't available in the US at least until model year 2006.

the 280 is a fine car. The V6 engine is fantastic and sounds great, returning decent MPG. However as etyu stated the addition of green filters helps amazingly for your fuel consumption.
The 280 is a better engine than the 200 definately, however if your looking for something more affordable on fuel and not for raking, its def the 200.
if you can go for the 350, its performance is superior again to the 280, and is a great car.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the overwhelming responses!
Well, I've just updated my location in my profile. I'm from Malaysia.

I guess I've made a mistake quoting the year ..It should be 2006 since I can't really find any models dated 2005 online. I've read somewhere from Malaysian newspaper classifields that it was 2005. thought they've made a mistake.

In Malaysia, MB SLK isn't being sold as the same price as it's in Europe or NA. Malaysian government has imposed a hefty tax on imported vehicles. The current selling price for SLK 200 is around 400,000 Malaysian Ringgit which equals to approx. 87,000 Euro. SLK 280 is being sold around 97,000 Euro and SLK 350 around 100,000 Euro. SLK 55 AMG is definitely out of my reach. The prices might fluctuate a little bit or go lower since then. Anyway just wanna give some ideas abt the price.

It seems like SLK with V6 engine has higher fuel consumption compared to 200 inline 4 one. I guess I might want to go with SLK 200. However I'm still envious of V6 higher performance engine . I read somewhere that 2.0 cc engine is a little bit disappointing with low watts of power for its sporty look and design. It's not a "sport car" equivalent performance.
Any thoughts on this?

I've previously thought of getting a Brabus tuned version of SLK 200, namely SLK K4 which is being sold at the price of SLK 350. I've had a visit to the showroom and the salesman is nice. More details here
http://www.worldcarfans.com/tuners.c...edes/brabus-k4
I've barely any idea why that car is priced so high since the seemingly difference is the power increase of 30hp. Maybe I've overlooked some other things like bodykits modifications..etc. Curious to know how the case is for Europe/North American model. How much does it cost for Brabus K4 engine upgrade? Has anyone done this to his car before?

thanks

That Brbaus in your link consists of:
front splitter
twin fog lights
side skirts
lowered (springs i assume)
Brabus monoblock rims (look to be 19's)
aluminium roll bars
...and i would also say brbaus exhaust and rear fender.

a good modified car, and to be honest it is absolutely gorgeous looking!!!

Yeah..I agree. It's definitely awesome looking! In fact, I was so perplexed with its look while I visited the showroom 6 months ago that I considered it as one of my pending purchased car.
However with its equal SLK 350 price level, do you think it's still a good buy? Please note that this is just a SLK 200 tuned car.

it all depends on what style of driving your looking for. if you are very rarely going to be able to appreciate the power of the 350 by having open roads, and fast driving, or the need for alot of torque for overtaking then it wouldn't be worth your while. spend the money on the fully loaded 200 instead. but if you have the opportunity for fast driving alot, like i do, then i would absolutely go for the 350 over the 200. all these parts can be added at a later date very easily, and there are many other tuning options available for the slk other than brabus, some much nicer IMO.

I would say get a 350 if you can or if you want the K4 for the looks.

Personally I would go for a new manual gearbox 350.

I had the R170 230 kompressor and now the R171 280. The difference is quite dramatic. This is not to say that the 230 wasn't good, but the 280 just drives, sounds, and climbs much more sportier. And more refined if you will. Surprisingly, I get better mileage with The V6 -- about 24.5 combined in my 600 miles with The car so far.
