Two year oil change

I've been questioning the suggestions of an oil change at least once a year. I know that many big trucks only change their oil when an oil analysis says it is needed. So I decided to give a two year interval a try. Attached you will see my oil analysis after two years and 5300 miles. The results are outstanding and the lab says that I could easily go a lot farther on the oil. I probably won't go more than two years, but there is no doubt that using the correct oil, Mobil 1 0W40, and the correct fleece oil filter one can go farther than a year between changes if the miles you put on your car are low.

I could not find any requirement in the owners manual or service manual of a one year requirement from Mercedes. In fact I couldn't find any indication based on time. I'd like to have someone point that out to me if it is in fact in print. It is also interesting to note that my service indicator on the dash had counted down to 2 days for service being due. I had last set it almost two years ago. Unless that was a coincidence, it looks like the time counter counts down from two years and the mileage counter counts down from 10,000.

Very interesting question. Personally, I do not see a time dependency link....within reason.

I do like the idea of a thorough safety check which should accompany an oil change. The master MB mechanic that services Challenge spends about an hour looking everything over each time the oil is changed.

Agreed - I do all of my own service and would bet that my care and inspection of my car is at least as good as anyone without more than a financial interest in it.

I completely agree and do all my own maintenance on several cars. My college daughter's '06 Mini has a built-in drive style analyzer with regular changes at 15,000 mi. I got concerned after 6,000 mi over 3 years that the Dash Nanny was silent, and changed the oil/filter anyway. It was nearly pristine, and she always leaves it outside (OK, it's SoCal). So, what gives with dealers, and others, 3,000 mi. service rants?? $$?? Any good synthetic and 7,000 -12,000 mi over two or even three years seems possible/reasonable, but where's the solid info? Who's doing the oil analysis and what does it cost?

Here is the oil analysis company I use - Performance Analysis | Climate Control | Diaphragms | Blower Motors | Pushbutton Panels | Vacuum Door Locks | Autotemp | Cruise Control | Engine Oil Analysis | Mercedes-Benz Parts | Mercedes-Benz Club of America | Oak Ridge | Car Care - Engine Oil An

Cost - about $14 each. You certainly don't need to do an analysis every year or even every oil change. Once you have a baseline, you can do an analysis pretty infrequently just to verify that nothing has changed.

This last time I changed the filter after one year, but with the fleece filter, I'm not even sure that was needed and will likely skip it this time around.
