Manual Key not working - Questions

I recently purchased a 05' SLK350. I have to say the car is beautiful and drives great. I only got one key when I bought the car. Did some research and it looks like if I want a second key I have to go to the dealer. Not really happy about that, but it is what it is. The key fob is working fine, but decided to check the manual key. It will not unlock the car or the trunk. I can turn the key about 1/4-1/2 turn on the door and nothing. On the trunk I can turn it about 3/4 and I hear a click on the latch, but the trunk doesn't open. I have sprayed WD40 in both locks and tried wiggling and shaking the key with no luck.

1. Do I need to replace the door/trunk cylinders in order to get a working manual key? I fear if/when the battery goes dead I am SOL
2. I assume if I get a new second key I will need to get it cut from a locksmith correct? Just need to get a working manual key first.
3. Was thinking about wiring up a connection to the battery so I could access it from underneath if the battery dies. Anyone do something like this?
4. Is there a Mercedes Parts website to look up Part #'s? I use Realoem for my BMW.

By the way, great site. I trolled around for awhile before I purchased the car. This is my second Mercedes and will not be my last. Thanks for your help!!!

The manual locks can get like that as they are rarely used unless you keep them lubricated. Keep pumping wd 40 down them and try the key I cant believe that both locks are broken. Unless you have been given the wrong metal key of course. Once your happy the key works you can buy a blank off ebay and get a decent locksmith to cut it. They are not easy to cut but a good place can do it. I have had a spare cut. Dont be tempted to buy a key fob off ebay as I understand that only a dealer can code it and they wont do them.

Keep going at it with the WD40... This is a common problem because everyone uses the fob all the time.

Highly recommend that you hook up the remote charger. Lots of advice/examples on the DIY thread. Use Search top right.

Welcome (great minds think alike!)

Thank you for the replies. I am not new to online forums. I searched a ton before posting my questions. Seems like the key is a common issue. It is possible that I received the wrong manual key, but then why would it almost work on the trunk. It turns to the right and makes a clicking sound, but the trunk doesn't release.

I will bite the bullet and get the car re keyed if necessary. Seems like a total waste though if I can rig up an external charger port. Conflicted on what to do....don't want to waste close to 1k to get a manual key when I will never use it.

Signed up for the website...thank you!!!!

Personally - I'd spend time working the lock as others have said with WD40 or other penetrating lubricant. Your local locksmith also sells a purpose made "cylinder cleaning" spray you may want to try.

I'm not sure why you would consider getting the car re-keyed - again, worse case, a locksmith can "clean" the existing cylinders unless they are physically damaged. I'll have to go try mine, but I don't recall that the trunk key really turns that much, so you may just have something loose on the locking mechanism.

A new key, with the new chrome style fob and a pre-cut manual key is about $280 usd if you decide to go that route.

With regard to the "externally accessible" charging point, take a look at some of the battery tender threads - some good ideas there.

Sorry if the search comment came across negative. I was saying that I did try and search for the information before posting. I saw that the lock are a common issue. I will keep trying to lubricate the locks and hope for the best. I am definitely going to get another key no matter what. As for the cylinders being changed that is a last resort. Going to look into the external battery connection though..will post up pictures and a DIY. Figure its better to have one and not need it then be locked out without a working key.

I just ordered the ring battery terminals, 12' and 25' extension cables for my battery tender. Plan on using the 12' and routing it somewhere I can access the end if the battery dies without lifting the hood. Thank you for your help. I'll report back to let you know about the manual key issue. Planning to try liquid wrench tonight instead of the WD40 and see if that helps. I don't unfortunately know if the key is even the right one since I bought the car used and only got 1 key. It's my fault for not trying the key while at the dealer.

Interested to see (including photos) on how you do your set-up connecting without having to open the hood/bonnet.
