Pogo Alert+, does what's advertised on the outside of the box, and is loud enough to hear with the top down. So far, so good, no points to report!

Downside is you have to pay for a subscription to keep the database up to date, but that seems to be the case with most of the ones I looked at when I decided on the Pogo.

Adam (GTRBoy) has a app on his iPhone he really likes - not sure which one it is, but I so rarely have my iPhone where I'd see or hear it, never really considered that a viable option.

I run a Valentine 1, excellent bit of kit that picks up radar from miles away on a straight road and also has a laser detector which is probably not worth having. Unless you are jamming radar it is probably all over by the time it's been detected with any detector. I like the arrows and the threat counter on the V1 so you always know from which direction the radar is being picked up from and how many threats there are.

What Ade said - if you are just "detecting" laser, you are basically detecting the fact that you got a ticket - but yes, the Pogo Alert+ has a laser module.

I run a 9500ci with Laser Jammers stateside, and they do the job, but even so, you gotta have your foot on the brake the minute the alarm goes off. In my sleepy little town in Louisiana, the coppers can punch through the jammers at about 800 yards from the front in a couple of seconds. Fortunately I grew up with most of 'em, so at least we have a good Saturday's fun seeing what the jammers could and couldn't do.

I have a Road Pilot Microgo, which for the money is great value. Shows your current speed and the speed limit when close to a gatso.

I hardly use it though, as I don't like having cables everywhere, and also never leave it visible when the car is parked up and therefore most of the time, can't be arsed setting it all up...albeit that it only takes 20 seconds or so.

As a result I've just bought myself something called a Quintezz Spy off eBay. Only cost me around 80 with shipping. It's discreet enough to leave on the windscreen somewhere, it has an integrated battery (so no cables) and it's also solar powered...perhaps not that effective here in the uk!

If u want I'll let you know if it's any good once the item is received.

Please do - the Pogo+ is also battery powered, so at least I don't have to have the cables, but is not solar, so does require either me remembering to charge it or to bring the cables....

Laser jammers are illegal in the UK and they can detect if you have jammed the laser. The fine is even higher than the speeding fine. Most authorities publish where their safety cameras will be on a daily basis. I have ilot sat nav on my phone which alerts you to all cameras and established sites even if they are unmanned. The only ones it wont is where the police set up random sites with hand held ****. Just a point. All camera detectors are banned in France even if they are not working they will still pull you if they find one in your vehicle.

Easy way round it Dont Speed LOL They had a camera van on a motorway bridge on the M40 yesterday morning. I bet it caught loads. I was cruising at 70 and I was being passed all the time by cars doing well over 100. Plus Liecestershire are using their camera vans at night now. One favourite spot near me is over the brow of a hill on a slight bend. By the time you see them they have got you.

Same down here in Kent - must be an effort to make some cash before the end of the year. I've seen numerous camera vans and even a couple of coppers out in the rain with the hand-helds.

I agree. Its more about raising money than road safety.

I use a Road Angel. Had it for a good few years now. 5 a month subscription for the updates.

Works via GPS.

It's (IMO) an essential bit of kit when I travel somewhere new, and I'm unaware of where the (S)cameras are!

While I recognise it is easy to complain about speed cameras, your attitude changes once you know a pedestrian who's been killed by someone speeding in an urban area.

Anyone speeding in a 30 or 40 zone should admit they made a mistake and accept the fine + points.

I'll also add that the cash from the tickets gets sent to Mr G Osbourne at 11 Downing Street, London. The police & courts are only able to deduct an admin fee.

If you live in a neighbourhood watch area, you'll get updates from your community constable telling you how they have targeted certain roads and junctions with handheld cameras in response to resident complainants about speeding, or locations with high accident rates.

One other thought, isn't it a good thing that the police are concerned about speeding on dark rainy evenings especially in the xmas party season?

Yeah, in general I don't complain too much other than for our sheep chases, but my mom-in-law evidently got done for 35 in a 30. That's more what I'm interested in - just a reminder to make super sure you are at 30 and not a bit more....

Although the damned ones on the A2 I just hate - 50 limit, but they hide the damned things so that god forbid you want to pass someone doing 48 you better watch out.

So the detector arrived today from Germany.

Overall it appears well made and is nice and compact. I have my doubts about how effective the solar charging will go, as it's only a very small panel....but only time will tell. It is discreet enough for me to leave near the rear vision mirror, without it inviting people on the hunt for portable sat navs, etc.

So does it work???? Well I took a quick spin around my place where we have four gatso cameras. Each time it picked them up and gave ample warning. Three distinct beeps in short succession if you are not speeding, and 2x three distinct beeps if you are.

A correction to the price paid, it was only 70, which I think is a bargain. I'm normally fairly conscious about speeding, or better still the presence of speed cameras. This device is purely a back up in case I'm not paying attention.

I'll post again re the device once I've had it for a few more weeks.

Thx

I have gone total smart phone running ilot Live. Sat Nav, Camera warning and Live Traffic alerts. Saves having more than one device in the car and I am less likely to leave it behind when I get out of the car
