Hardtop issue...frequent or once in a blue moon.

I'm looking at buying a 2006/2007 SLK R171, is this a problematic issue since I prefer a proper hardtop instead of soft top due to longterm plan of keeping this car in case the top does not work/parts availability, then it will remain as a full-time hardtop until I find a suitable mechanic to fix it.

How often do they fail, my main concern is my 3 other Benz goes to my regular Indy and he says that I must go to MB workshop to fix any problems related to the hardtop only. As for all the rest like engine, transmission & regular maintenance he can managed without problems.

Planning of test driving few units next week.

Same here - three R171's and not a single top problem between 'em.

No problem, I open and close the roof while the engine is still running to save my baterry. Don't know if that is a good idea.

MB has fifteen years experience with the Vario-roof and it's proven technology. The SLK-Class was launched in 1996 on the new R170-platform. The SLK 230 Kompressor launch model was designed to compete with the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z3. Based on the 1994 concept SLK I shown at the Turin Motor Show and the SLK II from the Paris Motor Show.

Thanks so much for the many prompt feedback.

This is gonna be my 4th MB in the garage since my first MB W126 purchased mid last year. Going from all Jap to Continental since my whole family is happy with the ride and safety these cars are built on. Hoping to trade-in my Skyline R34 for the SLK since no one in my family dares to drive it so its always has to wait for me to tear up the highway. Age is catching up so I thought maybe it's time to get myself a roadster which everyone in the family can enjoy and drive.

My Indy also did mentioned he has ever heard of any problems with the SLK top, but he just mentioned it since he doesn't have any experiences in repairing one when he was once working for an MB service shop.

I will introduce myself soon in the newbie section after test driving few of the models available, though the 2nd had dealer usually sell the SLK200 version (Kompressor) with & without AMG kit. There is one which is SLK 280 but the roadtax is much higher plus the asking price is quite steep.

Hope to share my brief experience later this week. Thanks guys !

I don't know about "everyone" in the family being able to enjoy and drive the SLK-it only sits two at a time and some people might find the seats a little too stiff. Never had a problem with my roof, just some squeaks that can be fixed with lube or some nuts in the trunk. Good luck and let us know what happens.

The SLK will be a rotational ride for each family member going out as individual or couple outing. Since it's a small size roadster, it will be a blast to drive on mountain twisty roads. So far i am glad to have read the many positives threads on the durability, makes me more confident to settle in one in the near future.

Thanks Guys.

There is no need to worry. It will serve you well under any weather conditions. Just try it a few times before you buy it and that's enough.

You may also want to read a related post on pre-purchase inspections. I think one of the recommendations was to pour water over the top with the roof closed (of course) to make sure it isn't leaking anywhere. Though I haven't seen any posts about these roofs actually leaking.

I've had my 06 SLK280 for 2 months now and love the car. I operate the top at least 2x per day. Other than an occassional extra squeek here and there, it seems pretty solid.

Selamat pagi! If you're in Malaysia, I would strongly suggest to install the smarttop module so that you can put the top up while on the move. The sudden heavy downpours in Malaysia are not fun when you're on the highway and you have the top down...
