Exclamation 2007 SLK Costs of ownership @Edmunds

Hello,

I have put nothing into repairs and little into maintenance in the 2 years that I have owned my car, a 2007 SLK280 w/35K miles.

Just for grins I went to Edmunds where the project the "true cost" of maintenence plus repairs to be roughly $3800 U.S. for each year in the coming 5 years.

From experience, is anyone really paying this much to keep their roadster?

Please comment on the expected accuracy of the estimates pasted below if you have experience to base this on, I'd appreciate it greatly. Don in Carlsbad Ca.

I wonder where they get those numbers? Mine is not a daily driver but I do follow the maintenance calendar. Oil/filter change once a year is about $85 with tax, brake flush is about $120 once every two years. It is a bit more depending on location but nowhere near the $3800 from Edmunds.

I would say $500 / year as an estimate. Most of the time it is much less, but occasionally something more expensive fails.

if they're estimating maintenance/repairs/insurance/registration/gas costs, then yeah, $3800 a year.

Nope - this is just the repairs and scheduled maintenance part. I only drive 9000 miles a year and the estimates are based on 15000 miles per year, so that would assume that my car has 75K miles on it now and will be operating through the 150K miles in the coming 5 years. The number still seems high though. I have attached the numbers below:

.....................Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 TOTAL
Depreciation.....$3,189 $2,798 $2,462 $2,182 $1,959 $12,590
Tax/Fees.........$1,920 $151 $133 $117 $103 $2,424
Financing.........$1,220 $980 $724 $452 $164 $3,540
Fuel................$2,813 $2,897 $2,984 $3,073 $3,165 $14,932
Insurance........$1,975 $2,044 $2,116 $2,190 $2,267 $10,592
Maintenanc......$2,072 $1,205 $1,980 $1,933 $1,614 $8,804
Repairs............$1,517 $1,635 $1,761 $1,895 $2,039 $8,847

I think the Boxster can get pricey once you need to do serious work as the engine is buried inside. My friend sold his boxster due to his maintenance getting quite high. I bought an older '86 951 in 2000 and the PO was spending about $4k/yr then keeping it going as a daily driver. Once all the big things were changed out tho, and I keep it as a pleasure driver mostly, it hasn't needed a thing in like 4 years. Every car tends to hit that period where everything needs changing (shocks, brakes, exhaust, etc) ... that's when it gets painful. Usually the 150k mark for most cars I suspect. Daily driving, esp in bad conditions like snow/cold are harder on a car.

Depreciation, probably accurate

Taxes/fees, probably accurate - for new cars, most states have some sort of sales tax. After that, yearly taxes is minimal.

Financing - irrelevant unless you take out a loan

Fuel - equates to 700 gallons at 20 miles = estimate of 14,000 miles/year. Varies by owner, I probably put on 2/10's of that.

Insurance - I pay $700/year with pretty high coverages ($500 ded). $2k/year is way high. Maybe that would be accurate for a SL55 or if you have a bad driving record or something...

Maintenance/repairs - way high. Maintenance at an authorized dealer should be no more than $500/year. The only way you'd pay $3k - $4k yearly is if something is breaking every year.

But yeah, you'd have to be driving some crazy miles to see maintenance/repairs like that. And even then, the first couple years should still be somewhat minimal compared to much higher costs around year 4-5.

Edit: I guess if youre including replacing tires every 10k and a full brake job every 20k, that would be a big chunk of that maintenance cost. And would make more sense.
